Mangalore tense after attack on churches

Vasanthi Hariprakash, NDTV Mangalore in Karnataka is still simmering a day after churches were attacked by members of the Bajrang Dal. They have blatantly and openly threatened more attacks. There were some strong words from former prime minister and opposition leader Deve Gowda who has accused the BJP of attempting to turn the state into the "Gujarat of the South". Chief Minister Yeddyurappa is trying some damage control but said illegal conversions are going on, words that make only stoke the tension. Despite the violence against Christains, the BJP home minister seemed to add to the tension by attacking conversions at this sensitive time. "We are not against Christians, we are only against conversions. This organisation called New Life gets foreign aid and converts innocent people," said Mahendra Kumar, Karnataka state convenor, Bajrang Dal. For the past few days, churches have been attacked, altars destroyed, statues broken in a wave of violence led by activists of the Bajrang Dal. The Dal was unapologetic about admitting to the violence. They say they are targeting evangelical groups in and around Mangalore, which are carrying out forcible conversions. But so far there seems to be little evidence that New Life is carrying out forcible conversions. Also, the Dal may name one group but the target seems to be churches cutting across denominations. "They attacked our sacrament, something which means more to us than our lives just because something happens somewhere that doesn't mean you take it out on others," said Reverend Aloysios Paul D' Souza, Archbishop, Mangalore. Anxious to deny claims that the attacks are linked to a BJP government in power and that Mangalore is the bastion of the state's new home minster and the chief minister, the home minister flew into Mangalore. Grossly inadequate police force led to grapple with a city simmering over the issue of conversions, while the VHP has called for detailed talks with the Christian leaders on the subject, the BJP government clearly has its work cutout so that Mangalore does not become another Kandhamal .

Mangalore, Sep 15: No organizations will be allowed to take law into their hands. If they have any grievances about the other religion, let them complain to the police. The attacks on Christian prayer halls and churches in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts are condemnable. Nobody should take law in their hands. The police department has been instructed to take strict action against the anti-social elements, said chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, here on Monday September 15 evening.

Speaking to media persons at the Circuit House, here on Monday evening, he said that all people have their right to practice their religion. But one should not publish abusive literature against another religion. The Constitution does not allow that, he said.

A delegation from the Catholic community met the CM at the Circuit House and expressed their anguish over the attack on churches. They were asked to help the government to control the New Life organizations that was engaged in publishing abusive literature about Hindu gods and conversion. But the Catholic leaders stated that the New Life organization is not under their control, Yeddyurappa was informed.

Jobless Congress, JD (S):

The Congress and JD (S) have been jobless since a few months as they have no power. But the Mangalore incident has provided a job for them. Instead of helping the government in solving the issue they are politicizing it. Both Congress and JD (S) should not utilize the Mangalore incident for political gains, he said.

153 arrested:

Police sources said that a total of 153 people were arrested in the incidents that occurred in the state since Sunday. 53 people were arrested in connection with the attack on the churches. Others were arrested for pelting stones on the police while staging protests in various churches, sources added.

Sri Rama Sene Calls For Mangalore Bundh:

In response to today's bundh, and alleged conversion by some Christian groups, Sri Rama Sene has called for a Mangaore bundh on Sep 16, 2008. Normal life in Mangalore is expected to be affected for the second consecutive day tomorrow on account of the bundh. Public Transport, schools, colleges and shops are expected to remain closed on Sep 16.

Mangalore: Miscreants Extend Attacks on Churches In Kerala Mangalore, Sep 15: The anti social elements extended their attacks on Christian religious centers into the state of Kerala . They attacked St Joseph’s Church in Kasargod on Sunday September 14.

The church was under renovation and the devotees were using the school for Sunday worship. The miscreants attacked the school and broke the windows and statues on Sunday night. They also destroyed the boards belonging to the church.

A case has been registered at the police station and a probe has been initiated to nab the attackers. Home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has taken the issue seriously and deputed Kannur range inspector general on the probe

Mangalore Tense: Two Stabbing Incidents Reported Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (MR)

Mangalore, Sep 15: The attacks on churches across the city are now turning into serious violent situation, as two stabbing incidents are reported.

In Kulur, one person was attacked with lethal weapon. The name of the person who stabbed is not yet known. The victim has been admitted to the private hospital in the city.

Second incident was reported from Kodialbail. In both the cases, name and background of the persons stabbed is not known.

At the same time, the chief minister B S Yeddyurappa arrived in the city and addressed a press conference. He met diocesan priests before proceeding to Udupi.

Udupi: Christians Meet DC, Urge Adequate Protection to Places of Worship

Report and Pics from Hemanat Padubidri Udupi, Sep 15: Christians led by former Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy member Vincent Alva met the deputy commissioner Hemalata and submitted a memorandum urging her to provide adequate protection to Christians on Monday September 15 afternoon.

It could be recalled that a prayer centre belonging to one of the Christian groups near old service bus stand here was attacked by Bajrangdal activists on Sunday September 14 morning. Following this Catholics of almost all the 48 churches that come under Udupi zone had gathered in their respective churches in order to provide security to their churches.

Though attacks on Christians prayer houses and churches in neighbouring Dakshina Kannada district had given rise to sporadic violence, Christians of Udupi zone had maintained peace without giving heed to any rumours. Catholic youth who showed great restrain in not getting into violence, had urged all the Catholics to gather near deputy commissioner’s office in order to stage peaceful protest.

Accordingly more than 200 Christians from Shirva deanery, Kemman, Brahmavar, Udupi, Sastan, Barkur and other parishes gathered near deputy commissioner’s office on Monday. They were led by Vincent Alva, ICYM Udupi district unit animator Wilson D'Souza Shirva, ICYM Udupi former president Michael Rodrigues Sastan, ICYM Udupi president Manoj D'Lima, Catholic Sabha Kallianpur deanery president Felix Pinto met the deputy commissioner at her office and submitted memorandum.

The protestors restrained from staging any protest or rally but met the deputy commissioner maintaining peace. Vincent Alva speaking with the deputy commissioner said that conversion is nothing but an excuse given to attack Christians. “We are peace-loving people and we do not want to harm anyone by word or deed. We respect everyone and expect the same from others. But we have been soft targets for fanatics. We condemn these attacks and urge you to give adequate protection to our prayer houses, churches and to us," he added.

Accepting the memorandum, deputy commissioner Hemalata assured that all Christians in the district will be give complete protection and law-breakers from any religion will not be tolerated. “I want to send a clear message to all that anyone indulging in any kind of violence will be brought to books,” she assured.

Once the memorandum was submitted, group dispersed from the place silently. Though a few Bajrangdal activists had gathered outside deputy commissioner's office, nothing untoward happened, as both groups displayed exemplary restrain from violence.

Mangalore: Police Resort to Lathi Charge Near Bajpe Church, Opposite Athena Hospital

Mangalore, Sep 15: Continuing with their caning spree in the city, the police lathi-charged a gathering of Catholic protestors who had gathered at Bajpe church premises, in the evening, for dispersing them. It may be recalled, that prohibitory orders have been clamped in the city for three days.

Meanwhile, a gang of four miscreants assaulted a person named Deepu, said to be a Sangh-Parivar activist, near State Bank Circle in the city in the afternoon, with a knife. Soon, a big crowd gathered opposite Athena Hospital, where Deepu is being treated for the stabbing wounds. As the crowd threatened to swell beyond manageable size, the policemen dispersed the crowd, by resorting to caning, in the evening.

Mangalore: No Faith on District Administration : Bishop Aloysius Mangalore, Sep 15: Speaking on behalf of the bishop of Mangalore who is sick, Fr Onil D’Souza told the media persons on Monday September 15, that the miscreants have attacked the cross and desecrated the holy sacrament in the adoration monastery in Milagres. "There is nothing left for us now to say anything on the issue, as the miscreants desecrated the cross and the holy sacrament that are more precious than our own lives," he regretted.

The hooligans also attacked the nuns in the monastery. The nuns belong to the congregation of Cloistered Carmelites. They never come out of the convent once they enter into it. They spend all their life in prayers. They come out only for voting, with the permission of the bishop and when seriously ill, he informed.

No faith on district administration:

The catholic community has lost faith in the district and police administration, as the attackers have continued to target them relentlessly. The government machinery has failed to take action against the miscreants. The Catholics are also the citizens of this nation like others and they have all the right to live here peacefully, he stressed.

"The Catholics expressed their anguish by taking to the road immediately after the attack on the monastery. Meanwhile, a few youth belonging to the Catholic community have been arrested by the police. The police should release them immediately," he urged.

“District in-charge minister Krishna Palemar visited the bishops’ house on Monday. We told him not to give any assurances, but to ensure security to the minority community in the district,” he added.

“If the anti-social elements are taking law and order in their hands, why do we have the district administration and police in place? We are in a helpless situation. The Catholic community has never indulged in any forcible conversions or spoken derided any other religion,” he cleared.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza said, that the attack on the police by the youth is condemnable. "No one should take the law into their hands. This applies to all the groups and violence should never be the chosen path of the Catholics," he advised.

Mangalore: Fresh Violence: Miscreants Attack St Ann's Friary Grotto

Some miscreants damaged one of the statues located at St Ann's Friary at Bejai today afternoon. Thereafter, protestors gathered at Bejai church and later, took to streets, pelting stones at shops and establishments, at around 1.30 pm today. The policemen came on the scene and disperesed the mob, by warning them that they would resort to caning unless they stop the violent behaviour. The situation returned to normalcy thereafter.

Mangalore, Aug. 1 The brain behind the recent incident in Mangalore, which shocked the citizens with the MMS clipping of obscene film, Mangalooru Mungaru Male is said to be Vandana, also from Mangalore.

Accusing her of erratic behavior, her parents left her at Odanadi in Mysore about 2 years ago. She made news when she ran away from there after just 18 days, blaming Odanadi of harassing her. But her parents refused to take her back saying her conduct was not proper. Now it is known, she took paying guest accommodation at Mangaladevi in Mangalore. It is also said that she is mentally unsound.

Vandana first befriended one Jayasheel Kotian of Mangalore and stayed in a luxury hotel at Byndoorwell Circle. It later became a permanent place for their illicit activities.

Vandana lured young boys, from schools and colleges using drugs and sex, seducing them into her trap. It was revealed at the time of interrogation that they regularly booked rooms numbered 106, 107 and 109 for their activities. Vandana has also disclosed the names of 10 students to the Police.

About a fortnight ago, Vandana made news by selling obscene MMS clips through her aides. She later made a CD using these MMS clips under the title Mangalooru Mungaru Male which created a sensation in Mangalore.

The MMS racket was exposed on a TV news channel and subsequently some persons attacked the channel office. In this background, the Police raided the hotel where the film was shot. During the raid Vandana was found staying with Jayasheel and Prajwal Anchan. A VCD and 25gm of narcotics were also recovered from the place.

In another room, Shylesh Kotian, Swathi Pai and Vinayak Pai were caught naked. Here, a VCD and a mobile phone with camera were recovered, on which they were recording the obscene acts. In another room Shylesh Pai and Krithi too were found in the same state.

The bail application of all the accused came before the District Principal and Sessions Judge on Saturday. Judge H.M. Bharatesh granted them bail, citing that all the accused were still in their teens and that they were already embarrassed as their names had already appeared all over the media.

Mangalore July 25: Mangalore is caught in a vortex of obnoxious developments. First a Multimedia message showing two youngsters in sexual act goes around the city some of them got them free and some for money, secondly five persons have been taken into custody but the police are keeping mum about it.

It is estimated that more than 12,000 MMS pertaining to this video has been sent across the state and Mangalore appears to be on the top of the circulation according to sources in cyber law arm of the police. This comes under the cyber offences and the police are yet to reach to the bottom of it.

Even otherwise Mangalore has had several cases of pornographic video shooting as well as distribution of pornographic VCDs. According to the sources in the District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB) in the last five years there have been at least 3 cases of raids conducted on pornographic film making places usually in the lesser known lodges and hotels involving youngsters.

The latest circulation of a Multimedia Message that showed youngsters in the sexual act which was shot in one of the rooms of a lodge in the city. It was named ‘Mungaru Male’ (after a popular Kannada film) the message was circulated in the mobile phones all over the city. Police have swooped down to investigate on hotel Residency Gate in Bendoorwell in the city as the MMS carries the name of that hotel.

TV 9 ransack a black spot on Mangalore

It was a comedy of errors in the attack on TV9 office in Mangalore. It is true that the office was destroyed by hired goons they were subsequently arrested by the Mangalore police. It is also true that in the visual on the channel shows few persons belonging to the crowd in the Mall were shown in the story on the pornographic industry that thrives in Mangalore.

But putting the zig zag puzzle of the entire episode together gives a picture that is wrought in confusion, lack of clarity and unwanted and unwarranted attack on the TV9 Channel.

It all began with the circulation of a Multimedia Message that showed youngsters in the sexual act which was shot in one of the rooms of a lodge in the city. It was named ‘Mungaru Male’ (after a popular Kannada film) the message was circulated in the mobile phones all over the city.

Following up with this obnoxious development the Channel reporters made a story to warn the society in Mangalore about the growing menace of the pornographic films and the social malady that that accompanied it. The Channel in one its shots showing the highly fashionable parts of the city inadvertently scanned through the crowd at a popular Mall in the city in which was also incidentally shown without any special or implied intent.

When that story was aired on Friday the entire city sat up in disbelief that their youngsters were no more safe in the city from the pornographic film mafia. On the same evening the attack was carried on the channel by goons. The Channel authorities say that it was not the intention of the story to implicate or anybody but it was a general shot in which incidentally few persons who belong to the city have been shown.

Eight arrested, 'ganja' seized - Images

MANGALORE, July 27: The sleuths of District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) busted drugs and prostitution racket during a raid on a lodge at Bendorewell here on Wednesday.

The police have arrested eight persons in this connection. Two of the accused involved in the racket managed to escape.

N. Sathish Kumar, Superintendent of Police, said in a press release here on Thursday that the arrested include three women.

The police seized 850 grams of “ganja”, worth about Rs. 5,000, and four mobile phones from the accused.

A pornographic VCD featuring one of the accused was also seized.

The contents of the VCD were being circulated through MMS clips, the police said.

Mr. Kumar said that search was on to arrest the other two accused. He said the police had started a crackdown on people dealing with pornographic material using information technology tools.

Two held

The Panambur police and the Highway Patrol Squad of Panambur sub-division busted a pornography racket and arrested two persons during a raid on a commercial complex at Bykampady here on Thursday.

Those arrested are Kusumananda and Arun, who were reportedly running the racket at Durgadevi Communications shop in the complex, the police said.

B.S. Lokesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, said that the accused were reportedly downloading pornographic material from a personal computer to mobile phones of customers for a fee. The police have seized the personal computer and its peripherals. Two mobile chip memory cards and Rs. 685 were recovered from the accused. The estimated value of the seized material is Rs. 30,000, the police added.

A case has been registered.

Mangalore July 29: A real estate agent, who was shown in the TV 9 Channel programme along with his wife, has criticized the channel for publishing the video clipping showing him alo along with his wife, has criticized the channel for publishing the video clipping showing him along with his wife and tarnishing their reputation in the community.

Addressing the press conference Mr Lalith Rao who was accused of ransacking the TV 9 office, along with his wife, said that, “I and my wife Mrs Neetha are having highest respect and regard to the press and media, but both of us are totally shocked, pained, hurt and stunned due to the false publication made by the Channel in their programme “Warrant” on 21st &22nd day of July 2007 at around 10.30 pm and 4.30 pm respectively.”

Mr Rao who owns a Real estate agency “Smart developers & Promoters” at Pereira Pearls Building in the city, whereas his wife Neetha is employed at Furniture Bazar as a Team Leader at Bharath Mall Complex, Opp KSRTC Bus Stand, claimed they were the victims of false allegations and blackmailing.

Mr Rao accused the reporter of the TV channel for broadcasting their image on the channel for not yielding to his demand for ransom. Mr Rao alleged that on July 19th, the reporter of the channel called and attempted to blackmail the couple of publishing their picture on TV report connected to the blue-film racket, if they failed to meet his demand.

“True to the threats of reporter, the TV broadcasting in TV9 Channel, Programme ‘Warrant’, episode Mungaru Male, some blue film clippings were shown and in addition the Video Coverage of me and my wife Mrs Neetha proceeding in our Motor Cycle from Bharath Mall Complex was also shown. The clippings of ours in the channel that was published suggested that we too were part of this racket” said Mr Rao.

Mr Rao further said that “Our names are slandered, sullied and we have been subjected to a lot of mental pain, suffering and now a social stigma has been attached to us. We are not in a position to face the society as many of our friends in Mangalore and around Karnataka, who have watched the TV Programme are calling us and enquiring about our involvement in the racket. Some of our friends have also started looking at us in suspicion.” He added.

He said that he called the press conference to clear the minds of people who looked at the couple as part of the blue film racket and that no other ordinary man be subjected to such sort of humiliation, and degradation.

However, the sources from the TV 9 channel have rubbished the claims of Mr Rao and added that, if the allegations were true why Mr. Rao failed to lodge a complaint with the police. The channel sources also said that if the couple was blackmailed by their reporter, it should have been brought to the notice of TV channel bureau.

Stranger ransacks TV-9 office

Mangalore July 23: A stranger walked into the TV9 television channel office at Bendoorwell and ransacked the office.

SP Satish Kumar and Additional SP B S Lokesh Kumar who visited the spot soon after the incident, said the stranger arrived at the office around 9.45 pm and enquired whether any police have come to the office as he had filed a complaint against the office crew.

Soon afterwards, he started ransacking the office. The stranger has damaged a computer, a fax machine and other electronic gadgets. In the melee, Rajesh Rao, the lone reporter who was present in the office too has suffered injuries in his hand. He later fled the scene. When the stranger was ransacking the office, a woman who had come along with him, was waiting outside the office.

It is suspected that the stranger might be one of those persons who was accidentally covered while interviewing some people over a special story, that was telecast on Saturday.

Incidentally, the person had called the office in the evening and threatened to ransack the office as his clipping was shown on the TV in the special story on Saturday.

Suspects wanted to spark violence

Times News Network Mangalore: Three persons have been arrested by the Bantwal police in connection with the blast at a hall in Farangipet on December 7. The arrested are Nawaz from Kumpanamajalu Pudu village, Mohammed Musthaq alias Musthaq and Mustafa alias Muchappa, both from Farangipet. All are aged 19. All accused were arrested on Sunday at Thumbe village near Bantwal. Police said they had conspired to create a panic and commotion in the area so as to trigger communal disturbances. They also disclosed that they had used a crude bomb called ‘Thote’, which is normally used to kill fish in rivers. A similar type of bomb was recovered in the city following a confession of the accused Nawaz. Another motorcycle used to commit the act was also seized from the accused. The accused have been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangalore, Nov 22: The thieves who broke open into a jewellery shop situated just in front of Pandeshwar police station have decamped with gold ornaments on Tuesday November 21 night. "City Jewellers" owned by Ramesh Kamath is situated just in front of Pandeshwar police station here. However, the thieves have gained entry into the shop by breaking open the shutter. Though the entire shop has not been ransacked, the thieves have stolen several gold ornaments from a showcase. The total worth of the stolen ornaments is estimated at Rs 30,000. Jewellery owner Ramesh Kamath has filed a case with the Pandeshwar police in this regard. Finger print experts have already arrived at the spot and have begun investigation. Even the sniffer dogs have been summoned to assist in nabbing the thieves.

Daijiworld News Network - Puttur (GA) Puttur, Nov 15: While the kidnap case of Adobe CEO's son has unnverved social bigwigs, celebrities and bureaucrats all over the country, a similar case has now been reported closer home from St Philomena College hostel here. Charan Raj, hailing from Mysore and who is said to be studying in St Philomena College here has been kidnapped on Sunday November 12. A person, claiming to be a relative, arrived at the hostel and took the young man away. The incident is said to have taken place when the warden was away. Police sources said that it could be the handiwork of his own distant relatives who had some score to settle with the former's family. Though he had been kidnapped on Sunday, official police complaint had not been filed by anyone. But later reports said that the kidnappers have placed demand for Rs 1 crore as ransom for his release. Charan Raj is said to hail from an affluent family from Mysore. He is studying in I PUC in St Philomena College here. On Sunday, a middle-aged person approached him. Before leaving, Charan Raj is said to have told with his companions that he was going out with his uncle. This clearly indicated that Charan Raj knew the person who had come to take him. Sources also said that the DCIB police from the district have already reached Mysore and have collected some useful information about the case. However, the police are not releasing any information as of now. But the case has generated a lot of curiosity as well as fear in the region.

BANGALORE: Even a cricket match would not attract the kind of crowd that the Chinnaswamy stadium saw here on Wednesday.

The 55,000-capacity stadium overflowed as people stood, cheered, clapped, whistled, hooted, sang and danced, marking Karnataka's 50th birthday to the dhamaka of crackers, lighting of thousands of lamps, patriotic songs and folk dancing.

The enthusiasm was boundless, despite jostling crowds, occasional crackers in the stands and pouring rain. Be it the 70-plus Ekikarna (unification award winners) or the young schoolchildren who had come to dance to the Kannada songs, the rain drenched everyone to the skin, but dimmed nothing of the occasion's exuberance or colour.

In line with the history and culture woven into the fabric of the event, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy quoted Kannada poets and leaders extensively, even as he made course-altering announcements for the state and the language:

Bengalooru: Using the platform, nearly a year after his predecessor N Dharam Singh said Bangalore would be renamed as Bengalooru, he said: "I am formally stating that 10 cities including Bangalore will use their Kannada names in English also. The process to make this official is on."

The 10 cities are: Bengalooru (Bangalore), Mysooru (Mysore), Mangalooru (Mangalore), Chikmagalooru (Chikmagalur), Shivamogga (Shimoga), Belagaavi (Belgaum), Kalburgi (Gulbarga), Hubballi (Hubli), Hosapete (Hospet) and Tumakooru (Tumkur).

Name change

It will take another 45 days for Bangalore to be called Bengalooru along with nine other cities. The Geological Survey of India has to be informed by the Union home ministry and all maps must change to the new names.The revenue department sent a formal proposal to the Union home ministry on October 17 seeking to rename all these cities.

Bangalore: Wireless connectivity from Jan 2007

The Hindu BANGALORE: Laptop users in Bangalore will get seamless computer connectivity from January 2007. The Government has decided to first introduce it in Bangalore and then extend it to Mysore and Mangalore, which are emerging as major information technology hubs. A trial run for a fortnight from October 22 has been cleared by the Government and this will be operated by the mobile service provider, Aircel, free of cost to all those who operate a laptop within a radius of 20 km from the Vidhana Soudha. This trial run will be on till November 5 and will synchronise with the IT.in 2006, a mega event for the information technology sector. Key demand The new Secretary for Information Technology and Biotechnology, M.N. Vidyashankar, told The Hindu here on Friday that the seamless laptop computer connectivity would go a long way in satisfying the demands of the information technology sector. Providing continuous connectivity to laptops was part of the infrastructure demanded by the information technology sector. This demand had become justified all the more because of the traffic jams on Bangalore roads and the consequent increased time that the engineers had been spending in reaching their work places. With the seamless laptop connectivity using WYMAX technology, the software engineers can begin their day's work right in their car or a bus. During the recent Karnataka bandh, software engineers remained unaffected because they either worked from their home or reached their offices early. Good network Sources in the Government said another South Indian city was the first in the country to introduce mobile laptop connectivity to the web and internet but this was not quite effective since it was not seamless. The towers situated in that city were apparently not well connected resulting in a series of complaints. This was not the case with Bangalore because all the cellphone towers were closely linked and with a recent order of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the tower of one service provider could be used by others by paying rentals. Mr. Vidyashankar said the State Government was only playing a facilitator. From January, owners of laptops would have to pay a fee to the service provider. The new facility for which the infrastructure is expected to cost Rs. 5 crore, would be available up to Hebbal in the north, Whitefield in the east, Magadi Road in the west and Kengeri in the south.

Mangalore: Bundh Loss Estimated at Rs 1.60 crore

CM Unaware of Nagaraj Shetty’s ‘resignation’

Oct 12: The total loss incurred due to the bundh and the riots in Mangalore and around has been estimated at Rs 1.60 crore loss. Will this be paid by Bajrang Dal the organization which called the bundh? We have to wait and watch as the state government is yet to announce its decision on the same.

Meanwhile the highlights of the bundh are as follows

• 94 vehicles damaged • 62 shops damaged • 223 cases registered • 2 persons dead • 136 injured • 406 arrested and • 257 in preventive custody

In the political drama which has been set rolling by the ‘ace’ politicians, the ‘said’ resignation of in-charge minister for DK district B Nagaraj Shetty has been denied by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

The CM who visited city on Wednesday night was taken up by surprise when the press persons inquired about Shetty’s resignation. “I am not aware of it,” he said. “It is you (press persons) who are telling me of his resignation,” Kumaraswamy informed.

However situation in Mangalore has attained normalcy. Only a few isolated cases of police misbehaviour have been reported

Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa visited A J Hospital in Mangalore on Wednesday and held a meeting at the Circuit House with district and police officials.

Meanwhile 12 persons have been arrested for the attack on ambulance carrying nine persons to Bajpe airport.

The skirmish which exploded into a communal clash affecting life and property in Mangalore has finally been controlled with the help of a police force of over 3,000 personnel.

A Big Sigh of Relief as Curfew Goes off

Section 144 stays, Citizens should ensure causes don't recur

Mangalore, Oct 12: Finally the curfew is off. Vehicles are seen moving on the streets as before. People are seen getting into their normal life, with a sense of relief writ large on their face.

Daijiworld spoke a few people on the subject in the morning. Everyone says the the citizens are in a chastised state. Now it is everyone's duty to see that the past mistakes are not repeated.

They will never support bundhs in future, they said. Asked how they will oppose muscle power demanding closure of shops etc., they said it was the duty of the law-enforcing authorities to see that the citizens are not harassed.

Another said it was a good experience the ill-effects of a bundh had come into full focus and everyone would seriously think in terms of stopping all bundhs in future.

In the meantime, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and deputy CM B S Yadiyurappa arrived in the city by a special flight on Wednesday night. They visited the injured persons who are under treatment in different hospitals.

No more Curfew After 7 am on Oct 12 - Section 144 to Continue

Mangalore's suffering winds up by 7 am on Wednesday

Oct 11: The people of Mangalore and surrounding areas can now have peaceful sleep, for the night of Oct 11 will be the last night with the curfew, at least for the time being. The district police and the district administration have decided to lift the curfew at 7 am on Oct 11. However, Section 144 will be on for a few days.

Speaking to Daijiworld, SP B Dayananda said that the curfew will be lifted at 7 am once and for all, but the Section 144 will continue as a precautionary measure.

Just like Tuesday, the ‘push button phenomenon’ repeated in Mangalore. As 7 pm was nearing people made their way to their houses. For Mangalore it was like the push button activated at 6.30 pm itself, when the rush began.

Traffic jams were seen at every circle and the traffic police had to put in a great deal of effort to ease it. That the number of buses plying on the roads was inadequate was evident as people travelled even on bus tops (a rare sight in Mangalore). And the police, understanding the situation, did not object to it.

Wednesday went on as another day for Mangalore. The element of fear was less and people carried on with life as usual. Police presence was felt on every major road of the city and around.

Oct 11: As a sidelight of the trouble that created agony for the citizens here, mention must be made of an all party and all community peace meeting organized by the district administration on Tuesday, October 10. It was attended by district minister-in-charge B Nagaraj Shetty, deputy commissioner Maheshwar Rao, SP Dayananda, city mayor Ashraf and others on the dais, leaders of various political parties and communities and representatives of several organizations

Dakshina Kannada district's superintendent of police B Dayananda, upon taking charge here just over a year ago, had assured the public that law and order will be strictly maintained during his tenure. Some months ago, he launched the country's very first police blog on the Internet, which was soon followed by the Udupi SP.

In an interview to Daijiworld sometime ago, he had also pointed out that for peaceful and harmonious existence, public cooperation and awareness about respecting the law of the land was important as well. .

Trouble arose when an NGO representative took objection to the mayor's sitting on the dais since, he alleged, he was involved in the stone-pelting incident in front of the Mukhyaprana Temple during the disturbances. Immediately the mayor's partymen and supporters raised a hue and cry over it.

Allegations and counter-allegations started flinging from one end to the other. The people who had gathered with the sole intention of restoring peace in the city could not remain in peace within the hall. Slogans were shouted against the mayor and the minister.

As the situation was getting out of hand, DC Maheshwar Rao and minister Nagaraj Shetty got up to silence them. But perhaps the SP literally had the final word. He got down from the dais, took the microphone in his hand and told the persons who were shouting at each other in a raised voice and a stern tone.

The gist of his plainspeak was that the organizers would decide who should and who should not be at the meeting. Those who wanted to fight could go to the streets and he and his force would take care of it. Those who did not want to sit in peace could as well go out of the hall, he cautioned. He also told the so-called leaders to control their supporters, perhaps with a hidden mesage that if they could not control their own supporters, they could not be considered leaders at all.

The citizens of Mangalore, a large majority of whom have now made it a fine art of violating traffic rules like signal jumping, passenger overloading and speeding, seem to have realized the post-curfew effects of the police might. With the SP's warning, everything settled down, and appreciative responses like 'Very good, very good' were heard from some of those who had gathered.

If this is the kind of community and political leaders we have, even God may not be interested in saving our city, commented an elderly man who watched the entire proceedings not only in stoic silence, but disgust and frustration as well.

Mangalore: Oct 10 - City gets back into the Cocoon

Oct 10: The clock struck seven and the city went indoors! Curfew returned to the buzzing city and cast its spell of fear.

By 6.30 pm traffic on Mangalore roads went intense. A mad rush was seen on the roads.

By 6.45 pm there was a grave-like silence. For once there was a feeling that Mangaloreans have learnt discipline. It was not wrong to assume that cane treatment teaches all people a lesson.

By 7 pm Mangalore turned into a ‘No Man’s Island’ and the pinch of a curfew was felt by all.

The police vans with announcement for people to stay indoors were few. Perhaps they were not needed as people knew well that they have to be behind closed doors by 7 pm.

It was a nightmare for 30-year-old Varuna, a Frenchman who landed at Kankanady, Mangalore at 7.10 pm. Greeted with lathis, this Frenchman had more shocks than a pleasant journey.

He stepped into Mangalore on a transit to Kerala. Shocked to see the state of Mangalore, he had none to come to his rescue. However Daijiworld Correspondent who has special permission to move around in the city during curfew dropped him on his vehicle to the railway station.

“What has happened to this city?” was the reaction of this foreigner who had visited India nine times.

A peaceful day for Mangalore brought hopes for a better tomorrow. People are now hopeful that on Wednesday section 144 will be lifted and all will breathe the air of freedom once again.

Mangalore Remains Peaceful – Life Moves on Briskly

Oct 10: With the situation in and around Mangalore being peaceful life here caught up with its pace by noon. The initial hesitation to come out freely on the road and the fear of any sudden violence prevented people from venturing into their regular business.

But with no untoward incidents reported confidence was built in people and Mangalore was seen buzzing by evening.

Rumours were making rounds powerfully. The bus service was in full strength and the deficit of essential commodities was filled by traders within hours of vehicles moving into Mangalore.

Tight security by the DK police and the additional forces from outside the district kept a watchful eye on all regions.

The common concern is to move indoors before 7 pm when the curfew will be re-imposed till 7 am of Wednesday.

Superintendent of police B Dayananda speaking to Daijiworld said that there have been no major untoward incidents and the city and the surroundings are peaceful.

Google buys YouTube for $1.65bn

YouTube is growing in popularity

BBC Google is buying video-sharing website YouTube for $1.65bn (£883m) in shares after a weekend of speculation that a deal was in the offing.

The two companies will continue to operate independently, Google said as it announced the news on Monday.

YouTube, launched in February 2005, has grown quickly into one of the most popular websites on the internet.

It has 100 million videos viewed every day and an estimated 72 million individual visitors each month.

'Natural partners'

"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said in a statement.

He said the two companies were "natural partners" to offer a media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers.

Mr Schmidt also told investors that YouTube will be "one of many investments" Google plans to make in the video field.

However, the company will keep operating its own Google Video as a separate operation.

YouTube will retain its brand, and its 67 staff, including co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, will keep their jobs.

"Our community has played a vital role in changing the way that people consume media, creating a new clip culture," said Mr Hurley.

"By joining forces with Google, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners."

According to Comscore World Metrix, YouTube's audience has soared from 2.8 million unique users one year ago to 72 million users in August 2006.

Music tie-ups

The announcement came after a day of distribution deals drawn up by the pair.

Universal Music Group has signed a distribution deal with YouTube, which will protect the rights of the music firm's artists.

YouTube also says it has signed a deal with CBS, which will offer short-form video programming, including news, sport and entertainment on YouTube.

Google has also signed distribution deals of its own, with Sony BMG and Warner Music to offer music videos.

The Google deals should enable internet users in the US to view music videos, artist interviews, and other footage from the two firms on Google video for free from this month.

The content is sponsored through a Google advertising-supported revenue-sharing agreement.

Google also said that in addition to the advertising-supported video content, music videos from Warner would be available for purchase as downloads at $1.99 each.

As part of YouTube's deal with CBS, the companies will share revenue from advertising sponsorship of CBS Videos.

Mangalore: Oct 10 - Law and Order Situation - Day 6, Life limps to normalcy

Fear Still Alive as Life Limps to Normalcy

Oct 10: After five days of cloistered life, people returned to normal life. But the element of fear was evident. Further the eagerness to get back to routine life made people wait for 7 am on Tuesday.

Restless that they were, people were even seen near the barricades installed by the police by 6.45 am. As the clock struck 7 am, the vehicles zoomed on the deserted roads.

Within minutes Mangalore and around got up on its feet and moved around normally. However only few city and service buses ventured on the street. The rest followed them after a couple of hours.

Several shops remained closed till 11 pm, but the Central Market was buzzing with regular trade.

Lorries carrying vegetables, LPG cylinders, flowers and other essential commodities began entering Mangalore and soon trade resumed its lost pace.

Rumours were also active as reiterating the fear that people had after the dark days of violence.

However it was a great relief for people as they were fed up with the forced hibernation.

The situation in the city remained peaceful, but stray instances of violence were reported from the suburbs.

Police security was intense and they were watchful.

Will Vinayanna's words fall on deaf ears?

Mangalore: Eminent and highly-respected corporate head, educationist and community leader Nitte Vinay Hegde made a very valid point at a peace meeting of different communities on Sunday.

He called for a total ban on bundhs and also did some plainspeak by saying the elite and the business community has been bending over backwards to the muscle power of those calling for these senseless anti-social acts for too long.

Today our society is at the mercy of fifteen people, he said cryptically, which was heard in a deafening kind of silence. It is time the citizens and the entrepreneurial community showed some spine and stood up to this nonsense, he said in essence. He wouldn't have hit the nail anywhere else or any better.

It's time our elected representatives showed some responsibility and opposed any such bundhs. It's ironical to hear those in power today seeking a 'bundh' on 'bundhs' at this stage when the damage has already been done, while they themselves led bundhs and held the city or district to ransom, not so long ago.

If Mangalore earned a place in the international aviation map with a flight from Dubai landing here on October 3, the very next day the turmoil was begun by a 'bundh' which escalated into a wide-scale conflagration, resulting in a loss of millions of rupees and thousands of manhours.

Did we deserve all this?

And today we bow our heads in shame as several national TV channels, having pitched their tents here, show us bare to the world, while international print media right from the International Herald Tribune to the Straits Times carries the name of Mangalore for all the wrong reasons. Did we deserve this?

Then it becomes incumbent upon our business, religious and community leaders, social activists and thinkers to heed Vinayanna's words and put their heads together to stop this menace, once and for all.

Mangalore: Curfew to be Lifted During the Day on Oct 10

Oct 9: Curfew will be lifted between 7 am and 7 pm on Oct 10. However section 144 will be imposed for ensuring security and peace.

Speaking to Daijiworld, SP B Dayananda said that Mangalore and around has been peaceful and the police has left no stone unturned to restore peace and avert any untoward incidents.

Forming groups in public places is not permitted under Section 144. However, schools and colleges have been declared holiday in Mangalore and in Ullal regions.

Union Minister of state for Home Prakash Jaiswal who spoke after his visit to the riot-affected areas said that a report will be submitted to the Central Government with details of the communal clashes that triggered violence in Mangalore and regions around.

The state government will have to look into the issue of compensation to those affected by riots. Meeting of the peace committee should also be held, he said making his observation that the police force in the region was inadequate.

Jaiswal also informed that the Governor of Karnataka had not submitted a report to central government.

“Such a prolonged curfew is not good for the region. Peace must be restored at the earliest,” Jaiswal opined.

Mangalore and around remained peaceful with no major incidence of violence. However, a total of 158 cases related to the riots have been registered so far.

Oct 9: Never has Mangalore been so disciplined as it was on Monday. The 4-hour curfew began at 9 am and curfew was re-imposed at 1 pm. The rush on the road disappeared within minutes after the clock struck one.

However news of one person being attacked by miscreants in Bunder area has also reached our office. This is a clear indication that hatred is still brewing.

A mad rush is at the railway station where the student community can be seen waiting in long queues for railway tickets to return to their hometowns. The police at the station are having a tough time to control them and maintain order.

The train being the only transport available is the saviour to these students who have by now seen the ugly side of Mangalore. Students who are from North India and other far-off states have however made arrangements for accommodation with their friends from the neighbouring states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharastra.

The state home mM P Prakash has reached the city to monitor the situation.

Traffic Jams, Mad Rush during 4-hour Breather

Within minutes of the curfew being relaxed there was a sudden rush of people and vehicles on roads. The scramble for essential commodities was a common sight. But what was disappointing was the sudden hike in prices.

A litre of milk cost Rs 30! Which otherwise would have cost Rs 13. However people had to shell out that amount as it was inevitable.

The four-hour relief gave a relief to the people who never missed a minute to get out of their houses and breathe the fresh air of freedom. The hunt for essentials put them on their toes.

The foreign students for whom communal clashes, section 144 and the curfew was a never-to-forget experience entered the streets to fetch some food.

While the city-dwellers found most of the essentials after a quick hunt, the people in rural areas had to travel toward the city to meet their requirements.

Milk and eggs were the most-sought-after commodities.

Mangalore: Law and Order - Day 5

Update 8-15 am

Mangalore, Oct 9: The district administration has relaxed the curfew orders between 0900 and 1300 hrs on Monday, October 9. This will help residents to store up provisions and attend to other necessities. The order will be reimposed strictly after 1-00 pm on Monday.

So far there are no reports of violence since our last update.

The mild showers on Friday and Saturday nights may have helped to cool down tempers and douse the flames of hatred to some extent.

Mangalore Riots - What Really Happened. Is this the real version ?

October 08, 2006 Apollo, Desicritics.org The coastal city of Mangalore located nearly 300 kms to the West of Bangalore on the Konkan coast of Karnataka has seen nearly 3 days of intense riots.

The trouble erupted On October 4th at around 9 P.M. Some Bajrang Dal activists learnt that a van was illegally transporting cattle to the slaughterhouse in Kudroli and were waiting to intercept the Vehicle.

But contrary to what is being wrongly reported by the [word edited*] media like Reuters, PTI etc., they never actually intercepted it.

Events leading upto the Riots:

This particular van met with an accident enroute inside city limits with a Toyota Qualis, a Mahindra Bolero and two autorickshaws and then sped away in case of rash driving. The number of the van was noted by the driver of the Bolero vehicle. The incident occurred between Lady hill and Lalbagh area. From there, the Bolero van chased the 407 van right up to Kudroli.

The driver of the tempo meanwhile thought the Bolero was following him in the pretext of attacking the van for transporting cattle and in fear he informed his associates at Kudroli. Upon learning this, a group of men armed with weapons came to the rescue of the tempo driver and attacked two vehicles parked on the street. They also started pelting stones at the nearby shops and the mob that had gathered.

Later that night, the Chief of the Bajrang Dal, Vinaya L. Shetty, called for a Mangalore Bandh on the next day i.e., Oct 5, 2006 to protest this incident.

Mangalore: Curfew extended till atleast Monday evening

No fresh incident was reported since Sunday night and at Konaje, Ullal and Mangalore rural limits, where two persons have died and 80 others injured in three days of violence, Superintendent of Police B Dayanand told PTI. The curfew, which was relaxed between 9 AM and 11 AM to enable people to buy essential items, has been extended till 1800 hrs on Monday, he said. The district administration would take a decision on whether to relax the curfew for sometime or to continue it tomorrow morning, he said. As many as 300 people had been taken into custody in the last three days, Dayanand said. Karnataka Home Minister M P Prakash, who has blamed fundamentalists from both communities for the trouble in this communally sensitive coastal district, is expected to arrive in Mangalore on Monday to review the situation. Violence broke out on Wednesday when some Bajrang Dal activists stopped a vehicle carrying cattle to a slaughter house. A group of six persons travelling in an ambulance were attacked Saturday night, with one of them succumbing to injuries later. Another victim of a stone throwing incident died on Saturday morning. Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed held discussions on Sunday with the Home Ministry officials on the situation arising out of the communal clashes in Mangalore and also met Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi. The minister said the Governor had decided to cut short his stay in Delhi and return to the state in view of the tense situation arising out of the violence in Mangalore. Meanwhile, according to information received, one person hailing from Dubai, who was planning to return after the expiry of his visa, was allegedly waylaid by Bajrang Dal activists and stabbed to death. In Bangalore, Home Minister M P Prakash had said on Saturday the state government suspected the hand of 'communal fundamentalists' in the violence that also left more than 80 people injured and brought life in Mangalore district to a standstill for two days. Prakash had inferred that the banned Students Islamic Movement of India, VHP, Rama Sena and Hindu Jagran Vedike could be involved in fomenting the communal trouble. Mangalore: Curfew Re-imposed after 2 hours of relaxation

Flag March Held in City and in Ullal Daijiworld

After curfew was re-imposed in the city after the two hour relaxation. However the police took out a flag march in city. With additional forces joining in from Mysore, the simultaneous flag marches were held in Ullal.

In Mangalore city, several police companies of District Armed Reserve (DAR) and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) took out their march from SP office at 1 pm and traveled through State Bank, Bunder, Car Street and also march through Kudroli.

The flag march also took off in Ullal and moved through Thokuttu, Kuttarpadau, and reached Deralakatta.

This much appreciated move by the police intended to reassure the peace-loving people that police are with them. Further people also got a view of the security that the region has.

In yet another humanitarian move, the Southern Railway Mazdoor Sangh offered food packets to the persons in the Mangalore railway station.

Mangalore: Residents Holed up in Homes Again Update: 1-30 pm (MB)

Mangalore: As the relaxation of the curfew was annouced, the news, for once on positive note, must have spread like wild fire through SMS and phones. The way life suddenly got revived, it was like opening of the floodgates. There was mad rush for provisions, vegetables, milk etc. Apparently people may have found more spare time, so even the newspapers were sold out quite fast. Curiosity to know about the past three days' happenings may also have contributed to the brisk sale.

People were seen buying provisions in large quantities, being not sure how long the curfew restrction would remain. Shops and booths registered good business. There were reports that the prices had been jacked up and things were getting more and more expensive. A retailer told our correspondent that it was not his fault, but since the suppliers themselves had raised the prices, there was a rise in retail prices.

Since the police announced that after 1100 hours the curfew will be reintroduced more stringently, people are not daring to come out of their houses. For persons involved in essential services the police have been issuing passes. Yet, there have been cases where people have been beaten up before even getting a chance to show their passes.

There is no indication so far whether the curfew will be lifted soon, in view of a sudden flare-up in a couple of suburbs. Eveyone hopes that at least the curfew will be withdrawn, even if Section 144 stays as a precautionary measure.

There were some more sad episodes. A wedding that took place at Bendur had only close relatives. The reception has been postponed to a future convenient date. Sevak-Melvin Peris musical show has been postponed until further notice.

The national TV channels have camped here with their outdoor vans with satellite dishes on top. Times TV, CNN-IBN, Aaj Tak and NDTV are the prominent among them.

Two Hours of Freedom! – People Make the Best of Respite from Cloistered Life

The two hours of curfew relaxation was a respite to the people. Come 9 am and the city swung back to normal.

There was a mad scramble at milk diaries and grocery shops. The sudden rush of vehicles on roads resulted in traffic jam on several roads of the city. However the curfew relaxation was a delight.

Several who spoke to Daijiworld expressed happiness of getting the opportunity to come out of their houses. Bakeries, eateries, medical stories, meat centers and vegetable shops saw large gathering of people.

The police who were on vigil kept the people informed that their freedom would end by 11.

Mangalore: Relaxation in Curfew from 9 to 11 am on Sunday

Mangalore, Oct 8: Sunday October 8 began like any other day for Mangaloreans. People before realizing that curfew in on in the city, were on street to procure milk and other necessary things. But suddenly they realized their mistake and went indoors after receiving a stern from police on duty.

The situation in city still remains tensed but under control, said police sources. Since there have not been any reports of fresh violence either on Saturday night or Sunday morning, the police have decided to lift the curfew for 2 hours on Sunday October 8 morning.

Accordingly there will be relaxation in curfew from 9 to 11 am on Sunday. People can procure necessary things including food during these hours. However, the police have strictly ordered the people to get back to their houses by 11 since curfew will be re-enforced thereafter.

Depending on the situation during these two hours, police may ponder upon relaxing it for one or two more hours in the evening.

Meanwhile, a total of 2 people have died and 70 have been injured in the violence spree so far.

While one was stabbed to death on Friday night, one more was stabbed at Punchame near Polali on Saturday afternoon. A total of 7 persons were going to airport on an ambulance who were attacked by a mob at Punchame. After attacking them, the mob locked them inside and the set the ambulance on fire.

As a result 4 of them sustained serious injuries and out of them one died in a hospital later. Otherwise the situation is very much under control in the district.

Mangalore: Grave-like Calm and Silence Pervades City

Mangalore, Oct 8: With the exception of two isolated cases of violence that took place on Saturday evening in Polali-Addoor and Farangipet in suburban Mangalore, otherwise the city was marked by grave-like silence. After hearing about some of the people who had a 'taste' of lathis from the police from the outside districts and state, who had any knowledge of the local situaion, people or languages, most of the residents stayed indoors.

There are reports of many people going without food, ironically not for want of money, but there are no shops open to buy daily provisions from. The residents was eagerly waiting for the relaxation of the curfew, likely to be for an hour around noon. Informed sources said the curfew could be lifted, but the Section no. 144, prohibiting assembly of assembly of four or more persons anywhere, is likely to continue for some more time.

State police chief B S Sial, who had once served in Mangalore as the SP of the undivided DK district, could be very well-informed about the ground realities and circumstances here. He is expected to take a wise decision, both in terms of law and order, and convenience of the general public.

Mangalore Bundh and Common Lives - as an Eyewitness

Mangalore, Oct 8: Over the past three days, Mangalore has been burning, life is disrupted and the common man is petrified. Mangalore has never seen such days ever before.

On Oct 4, 2006 there was a Bundh called by Kannada activists for implementation of Kannada in Belagaum, on Oct 2, 2006 there was communal violence in Kudroli which next led to two disastrous days in the city and the suburbs.

Very few people are the cause for this Bundh, for these riots, but thousands and thousands are the sufferers!

I had an 'experience' of a lifetime to witness to this unexpected Bundh when I was in Mangalore after the great joy of a lifetime after the inaugural flight from Dubai on October 3.

This is not something that had happened anytime earlier in Mangalore.

For the moment, it is hard to believe whether this is the same Mangalore where companies like ONGC are intending to invest more than Rs 40,000 crores and a place where SEZ is expected to set foot.

A couple of incidents which I witnessed made me think a lot about the life of a common person.

On October 5, some of the organizations had called for Mangalore Bundh on the pretext that a certain community was hurt!.

It was around 12.30pm. The place was Bendorewell where Daijiworld.com office is situated. The response to the call for bundh was not so much. Buses were not plying, because the owners were concerned about their safety. I do not think they supported the bundh as a cause!

An auto was parked below our office and the auto driver was waiting for passengers to carry. A group of people suddenly landed, started abusing the driver and pelting stones at the auto. Within minutes, the glass window-shields of the auto had turned into shards. The driver was scared and dumb-struck. The group disappeared but auto driver was so numbed that he could not move for some moments.

A few people gathered around. The auto driver was in tears. Just a few words from hit my ears as well as it touched my heart.."Sir, I depend on this auto for my daily subsistence. Yesterday I could not operate the auto due to Bundh..and today if I don't work, I cannot feed my two-year-old daughter and wife. I had no option to operating the auto today. I just needed couple of passengers to have my today's to earn our bread!'

But..the bread had been snatched away by the miscreants, and moreover he needed to get his windshield of his auto replaced out of his pocket, since insurance will not take care of it !

What a pity...what a punishment for this poor auto driver, when he was not at any fault?

On the same day later, I witness another touching incident which in fact became the inspiration to write this story.

The movement of vehicles had come to a standstill. No city buses, no auto rickshaws, or no other passenger vehicles.

A poor man was riding a rickety bicycle using only his right hand, while he was carrying a baby, about a year old, in his left hand. The baby appeared to be either sleeping or ill. He was balancing the cycle with a single hand, while also in a hurry to reach his destination, maybe a hospital or his home, where the baby needed care and attention. It was a poignant moment for anyone who witnessed it !

Most obviously, the man wanted to save his child and take it to the hospital. But there was no one to help him.

We are living in a country with a history of 59 years of Independence, but still we have to live on other people's domination and at someone else's mercy.

Whose fault is it and who has to pay for it?

Is there any human concern?

On October 5, 2006 the situation was worsened in Mangalore. The morning was horrible. Perhaps, Mangalore has rarely seen such a thing before.

The day belonged to the police force rather than the miscreants. Mangalore Police force was also joined by forces from outstation bases and other states. What I heard from my colleagues at daijiworld Mangalore was indeed heart-rending. A couple was riding by bike. The police stopped them and started beating up woman sitting behind ! She has no time to explain her reasons, but the police were just enforcing the curfew orders. The shoot-at-sight order was more favourable to the police forces. What was more unfortunate was that as he observed that the police were beating her up, the man in the front seat fled the scene, without least concern for his pillion-rider!

Who knows if she is his wife, colleague or just a friend who wanted a lift in the absence of public transport?

But the man never stood by his partner and the police just wielded their unquestioned might.

Once again, it is the miscreants who are the cause for all this.

Mangalore is indeed burning, the communal forces are in the driver's seat of the situation. The security forces are doing their best to control the damage.

Who are the losers?

Until now, as on October 7, in the three-day-long bundh, business activity has been totally grounded; losses suffered could be in millions... for whose sake did all this have to happen?

The international flight had landed just a couple of days earlier and already made three successful trips. People are expecting Mangalore to boom. But only things that boomed were the rounds of tear-gas lobbed in some places as also the rounds of fire aimed in the air to scare the mobs.

Many people are planning to invest in Mangalore...but in this situation, will they be ready?

This communal violence has surely affected the image of Mangalore. The original image will either not be retrieved or take a long, long time to revert to the old state.

Mangalore is not like Mumbai, where people might forget the riots overnight and get back to business. People of Mangalore are sensitive; surely the prevailing situation will put a lot of thoughts into the minds and hearts of each intellectual individual who believes in decent life...

Mangalore had never been like this....let us pray it would come back its earlier, normal condition.

Mangalore: Curfew was relaxed for two hours on Sunday morning in Mangalore, Ullal, Konaje and Mangalore rural limits which were hit by communal violence leaving two persons dead in the last three days.

On Saturday night, an ambulance carrying seven people was attacked by a mob about 20 kilometre from the city centre.

A group stopped the ambulance and stabbed the occupants.

One of them died on the way to the hospital and the other is seriously injured.

No other incident had been reported, district Superintendent of Police B Dayanand said. "The situation is under control now," he added.

The curfew was relaxed between 0900-1100 hours IST. Violence had erupted on Wednesday after Bajrang Dal activists stopped a vehicle carrying cattle to a slaughter house.

Mangalore: Curfew imposed Late Friday Night to City Limits

Updated at 10-45 pm Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore (MB) Mangalore, Oct 6: After a few serious cases of assault and violence reportedly took place in Padil and some other places within the city limits in the late hours of Friday evening, the district authorities are reliably learnt to have extended the curfew orders to city limits also. This step has been taken after 8 pm, as confirmed by the district police control room to Daijiworld. People were taken unawares. Apparently there were no announcements by mobile public address system. Many people in Hampankatta and downtown areas who did not know of the latest developments has to face beatings. People who did not store enough provisions at home and daily-wage-earners will have a tough time, since the police sources indicated that the curfew might last till Monday. Further to the earlier news report about the shoot-at-sight order, it was announced that the necessity of such a measure is part of the curfew enforcement in extreme circumstances. Kodagu SP Ramachandra has been deputed to take control of the Bantwal area until further orders. DK SP Dayananda will provide a briefing on the situation every day at 6-00 pm until further notice. Twentytwo additional platoons are being deployed to control the situation. If necessary, as assured by the state governmentm forces from outside the state may also be requisitioned. The services of the Rapid Action Force may be sought as well. The situation will be reviewed after 48 hours. Depending on the situation on Saturday, further orders on opening of shops and establishments would be issued. A peace meeting of political leaders, community leaders, heads of organizations and officials will be convened on Saturday, October 7 evening to chalk out ways and means to maintain peace, law and order and harmony.

Mangalore: In order to bring an end to the tension which prevailed in Car Street, the police in a quick operation arrested several persons who were involved in stone pelting in the evening.

Several squads of police marched into the narrow streets of Lower Car Street where groups were involved in rampage.

At Bajalkeri the police resorted to bursting tear gas when a mob grew violent and began pelting stones. A scooter was also set ablaze.

Police caned everyone and arrested several. However innocent people who were present there also had to bear the brunt of the police sticks.

Within a few minutes the road was cleared and several arrested. The fire brigade extinguished the fire.

Mangalore Bundh: Violence Abates – Situation Under Control

The situation now seems to be under control. From dawn the city and outskirts have been dotted with instances of violence. However pro-active policing by the DK police has brought the situation under control.

The dynamic DK SP B Dayanand had personally been on rounds to all the hyper-sensitive areas in and around Mangalore. The SP who has been tirelessly monitoring the situation from Wednesday night was seen at the spot of violence with his best efforts to bring the situation under control.

The major set back that several persons observed was that the police were not prepared to handle such a situation as a police platoon had been sent to Baba Budangiri.

After the major group clash in the Bunder area in Mangalore where the police resorted to bursting of tear gas no major untoward incident has been occurred.

One cannot ignore the role of rumors that have been widespread from Wednesday night in creating tension and fear. The city grew peaceful by 5 pm.

Section 144 will however be continued till Oct 7.

Mangalore: trouble-makers Tear-gassed at Bajilakeri

An alarming development is the spread of violence in various parts of the city. A place of worship was attacked by miscreants which led to an violent upsurge.

Police resorted to light cane-charge in front of Mukyaprana Temple in Mangalore after which the situation was under control. But however within a hour fresh violence occurred which led to friction between people of different communities.

The entire Bunder area was gripped with tension. The police burst several rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd.

A tempo was also set ablaze and two lorries have been damaged due to stone pelting.

Latest reports have been received of miscreants setting ablaze a shop at Pumpwell and at Old bus stand.

Mangalore: Mob Assaults Media Persons at Chokkabettu

Fresh reports of violence have been received from several pockets of the district. The tension which took birth in Mangalore had its impact even in places like Karkala, Beltangady, B C Road and Bantwal.

Media persons too were beaten up by miscreants during the violence on Thursday. Two persons belonging to a local news channel were attacked by a mob of around 200 persons.

Shivaprasad the cameraman who was on his bike to cover the violence at Suratkal was attacked by a mob at Chokkabettu around 2 kms from Suratkal.

Places from Krishnapura, Chokkabettu, Belthangady, Kalladka also witnessed violent attacks.

A rickshaw was set on fire at Pumpwell while in several places stone pelting has been reported including Uppinangady, Thokottu, Bajalakeri.

CSRP, DAR forces are in action and DK SP B Dayananda has been personally inspecting the hypertensive areas.

Additional Police Force Deployed in Mangalore

Mangalore: Additional police forces have been rushed to Mangalore to control the situation after violent attacks mushroomed in several places in and around the city.

While Mangalore city remains calm its suburbs have been witnessing instances of violence. Our man from Suratkal has informed us that tension has been brewing in the place.

Several instances of violence have come from Suratkal which are an indication that several groups have been actively involved in violence.

Police forces have been deployed from Udupi and Chikmaglur. A police platoon which was sent to Baba Budangiri has also been called back.

Fresh instances of violence have been reported from Donderkeri. Stones and bottles were thrown at buildings. Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.

Police vehicles with loudspeakers have been moving around the city informing people to stay indoors.

Section 144 Clamped in the City

Although no incidents have been reported in the city, Section no. 144 has been clamped within the Mangalore city limits. The district control room has informed Daijiworld that the same prohibitory orders have been promulgated in areas outside the city where disturbances have taken place, like Suratkal, Farangipet, Bantwal etc. for a period of three days.

Mangalore, Oct 5: Police resorted to lathi-charge at Adyar Padau and B C Road. Reports have been pouring in on police taking intense steps to disperse the mob.

Our correspondent at the spot has informed us that more than 1,000 persons had gathered and went on a rampage in Adyar Padau. Even after police opened firing in the air the crowd did not disperse completely following which they had to resort to cane charge

A van carrying milk was also attacked. Three passengers of a bus were injured as stones were pelt at a private bus.

The mob also attacked several vehicles and even persons on two wheelers plying on the national highway between Padil and Farangipet were attacked.

Police arrested two persons at Adyar in connection to the riots.

The violence which began at Farangipet creped to Adyar Padau. However tension prevails in the entire stretch from B C Road to Padil.

Latest reports have stated that friction among groups was witness in Lower Car Street and in the Central Market at Hampankatta.

Mangalore. Sep 15: The Gully Cricket brought to the city by Max TV channel, with anchors Charu Sharma and Mandira Bedi heading the show, provided a heady dose of diversion and entertainment for the young crowd on Friday, September 15 afternoon.

Two sessions of Gully Cricket played on the Women's Polytechnic Ground in Bondel and MV Shetty College in Gandhinagar, Kavoor provided a full-throat chance for young students of either institutions and others to play no-holds-barred cricket with Charu and Mandira. There were no rules, no boundary lines, no TV replay, no Third Umpire - nothing of the sort. Perhaps it was enjoyed at a higher degree than what is watched on the idiot box.

While the first batch of mostly local girls at the polytechnic were a shy, staid lot, the one at MV Shetty were made up of girls mostly from northern India. They threw all timidity to the winds and faced up to the volleys from Charu and Mandira with guts and abandon. Boundaries were hit all over.

When Charu came in to bat, it was raining sixers and at least half a dozen balls were sent over a building opposite the ground, obviously rendering them write-off material. They could not be retrieved.

At both the venues, Charu Sharma and Mandira Bedi were mobbed by youngsters to be photographed with them and for autograph-hunting.

Speaking to Daijiworld, both of them said they were simply moved by the response and enthusiasm and Mandira had a special word for the discipline in the crowd in spite of their being overzealous.

Later on, the star attractions paid a visit to the Reliance Web World, the local facilitators of the event, who were assisted by Shads in event management.

New Delhi: The Indian real estate market is likely to witness a 15-20 per cent drop in prices of residential space in Tier I cities over next one year where the prices have gone up rapidly during last 12 months, according to industry experts. "We expect that there will be a price correction of 15-20 per cent in the residential segments in over-heated markets like metros during next 12 months," Ernst and Young- Head real estate practice Ganesh Raj said at Indo-US Economic summit. “Price correction has already started in Noida in certain pockets,” he said. "After a certain price level, it will be a buyers market and developers will have to cut their prices," Raj adds. Hines Real Estate Managing Director Daniel MacEachron said price correction was expected in the land prices in the major markets (Tier I) over the next 12-18 months, which would lead to fall in the real estate prices in the housing sector. "The rising home loan rates would also lead to correction in the prices in residential segment," MacEachron said. DLF Ltd Advisor J K Chandra said some sort of correction has happened or would happen where the prices have gone up disproportionately. However, Chandra added that going forward the rate of increase in the real estate prices would not be as high as it has happened in the past 12-18 months. Later speaking on the sidelines, Chandra, who is also a Director of DLF Laing O'Rourke, a 50:50 joint venture between DLF and UK-based Laing O'Rourke, said that the JV has already started its operation with the company taking up five projects in Noida, Gurgaon and Bangalore.

Mangalore: What is the sum of 52+45-52+54-33+18? Ten-year-old Lanish Pinto solves this problem within a wink of the eye. It is this developed skill that made him a mathematical genius who won the State-level Abacus and Arithmetic competition held in Bangalore.

A student of V std of Morning Star, Bajpe, Lanish is the only child of Lionel and Shanthi competed with 50 calculations in five minutes.

More than 1,000 students participated in the various competitions conducted at the State-level on Aug 15 in Vijayanagara, Bangalore. Lanish who participated in the 1 level C Category won the first prize beating around 400 children from various parts of the state.

Speaking to Daijiworld, he said that in the first level he had to solve calculations with 2 digit numbers. However, he plans to perform better in the 3 level which will be in 3 digits.

It was John and Priya Tauro, who introduced young Lanish to the world of fast calculations through Aloha Learning Centre, Bajpe. However in a short span of time, this young lad grasped the knack of solving fire breathing monsters in the shape of digits.

“Once at Aloha training, we saw him improve in his calculation abilities and have also noticed his sharpness and quickness. But what amazed us most was the speed at which he calculates,” said his mother Santhi.

Lanish is one among the two who attend the Aloha classes from his school. His ability has even stunned his teachers and his classmates. “His teachers told us that when students begin counting using their hands, Lanish already has the answer,” revealed Santhi.

But for growing Lanish, the skill is just a result of his hard work and constant practice and not something acquired by fluke.

His eyes are now on the nationals which are likely to be held in Gujarath.

September 12, 2006 Karachi: Members of the Mangalorean Catholic community "may now be found all over the world - from Norway in the north to Chile in the southwest and New Zealand in the southeast. There are Mangaloreans in virtually every country in Europe and in virtually every state of the United States. There are Mangaloreans in unusual and exotic locations like Korea, the Bahamas and Papua New Guinea. What binds these diverse and far-flung members of the Mangalorean community is that they commonly descend from a small group of families who returned to their homeland in 1799" from captivity in Srirangapatna (Seringapatam in colonial records), writes Dr Michael Lobo, the genealogist extraordinaire, in the blurb of his book, "Mangaloreans Worldwide" (Camelot Publishers, 1999, ISBN 81-87609-00-1).

For those Mangaloreans worldwide who have not yet laid their hands on Dr Lobo's books, it will be a surprise to learn that there are many fellow-Mangaloreans residing in Pakistan too. For a few, it may not be a surprise because some of their relatives are already settled there prior to the Partition.

But it was really interesting news for all of us when we came to know that a few Mangalorean catholic families reside in Pakistan.

Daijiworld found a prominent Pakistani of Mangalorean origin, Joseph (Joe) Pereira, who was born in 1940 and did his initial schooling in Bendur, Mangalore, while his parents lived and studied in Mangalore.

Joseph's grandfather, Joseph Rosario Pereira, was the postmaster at Kadri Post Office during the period that his father, Piedade Victor Pereira, was a student at Bendur School and St Aloysius College in the 1920s.

"I did my first year of schooling in 1945 at the Bendur School and the next year at St Agnes, which was the year a tiger decided to visit our class room the previous night.." recalled Joseph nostalgically, while speaking to Daijiworld.

"We lived nearby until 1948 in the property which was later occupied by J S D'Souza & Sons, after we moved to Karachi."

"My maternal grandfather, Robert Charles Aranha, owned and operated a clearing and forwarding agency from Ballard Estate in Mumbai, but lived in the Catholic surrounds of Bandra around Pali very close to St Anne's Church and the Western Railway residences. When we moved to Karachi by steamer from Mumbai, we were at 44 Pali Mala Road. My uncle Michael Aranha was an Inspector attached to the Mahim Police Station at that time," further recalls Joseph.

"My father was a branch manager with Canara Bank in Madurai in 1947 while we stayed in Mangalore. There was a branch of Canara Bank in Karachi to which he was transferred and he stayed on after Independence and joined the Habib Bank. The family joined him in February 1948," says Joseph, while asked what could be the motivation to migrate to Pakistan.

In Pakistan, the present Catholic Archbishop of Lahore, Larry Saldanha, is a third cousin of Joseph.

Sixtyfive-year-old Joseph, though settled in Karachi, visits Dhaka in Bangladesh frequently. His association with Dhaka is since 1954 when his late father, a banker, was posted to Dhaka from Karachi. A sister now lives in Dhaka, while his mother passed away in Dhaka in January, 2004. Another sister of his lives in Karachi and a brother in New Jersey, USA.

Joseph did his higher education at St Gregory's Notre Dame, in the Physics Department at the Dhaka University and IBA, Karachi. He retired five years ago as executive director, State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan, Karachi, which was a highly coveted post.

Joseph is married to Elizabeth nee Souza 'Shet' and they have two sons and three grandchildren. There are limited number of Catholics in Pakistan, according to him. There are many from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Bengal, etc, aggregating to about 20,000. "Mangalore has a smaller share, not more than three figures," says Joseph.

Incidentally, Dr Lobo has identified the presence of Kadri D'Cunhas in Islamabad, Gazni Aranhas, Falnir Aranhas, Taccode Colacos, Puttur Goveases, Falnir Lobos, Bondel Menezeses, Balmatta Paises and others in Karachi, a Omzoor-Mayadi Saldanha priest and Cordel Souza Shets in Lahore, a D'Souza nun in Multan and Kadri Mirandas in Rawalpindi, among others.

Who knows, more may come to light after the news spreads with this publication.

Mangalore: Air India Express Awaits Approval of Flight Schedule

But the Director General of Civil Aviation is yet to approve the schedule, according to sources in Air India. The airline would operate its service between the two destinations thrice a week, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Schedule According to the schedule, the first flight from Dubai will arrive here at 6 pm and depart to Dubai at 9 pm. These timings will be in force till October 28. The flight will arrive at 6.15 pm and depart at 9 pm from October 30 to December 23. In the third phase, from December 25 till February 2007 the flight will arrive at 9.15 pm. and depart at 1 am. However, the confirmation of the timings will depend on the approval from the Director General of Civil Aviation. Air India Express has already set up its check-in counter at the Bajpe (Mangalore) airport. This flight service is expected to benefit a number of non-resident Indians in West Asia having their roots in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.

Mangalore Sep 13: The Barke police has arrested a quark who was operating in the city. On Monday, Sep 11, the fake doctor who has been found conducting free test for breast cancer for college students was held.

Sharath Kumar (58), a resident of Jyothi Nagar in Kavoor has been visiting the colleges of the city and conducting free tests for breast cancer. On Sep 8, he and his assistant Sunita had visited Canara P U College with similar interests. The fake doctor had collected Rs 25 from each student towards his mission to bring about awareness on breast cancer. The principal K Gopal Nair who suspected him to be true informed the police. However, the police had to return empty handed as Kumar had left the campus before their arrival.

On Monday evening, he was arrested. A total sum of Rs 19,300 and documents were obtained from him.

Sandeep's body was nothing but a skeleton and was identified on the basis of black T-shirt and blue jeans which he was wearing on the day of the tragedy. Sandeep's mother identified his body. As reported earlier, all the search operations had been called off after 15 days of the tragedy during which only two bodies lorry driver Manjunath and cleaner Umesh were found. The local divers who had taken a lot of interest and put in hard work in tracing these bodies with the help and guidance of Kadaba SI Nandakumar had given up the search operations gradually. But all the operations were resumed on Thursday September 7 after, Shridha, a student of Ramakunjeshwar College had jumped into the river. It was when the locals and the police resumed their search operations. Their efforts paid when they first found Suresh's body after which they also found Shridha's body. This led them to continue their search during which they found Sandeep’s body on Monday. With this, the administration too has breathed a sigh of relief since it is much easier for them to hand over the compensation to the families.

Mangalore, Sep 12: The Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited (MCF) contributed Rs 4 crore to the Mangalore City Corporation's second vented dam fund.

Prabhakar Rao, vice-president (production), MCF, handed over the cheque to Mayor K Ashraf at a function held in the council hall.

Ashraf said this was a historic moment for the corporation as it was now possible to raise funds from companies for the development of the city.

He said this was a vital contribution towards the dam to be built across the Netravati at Thumbe near Mangalore at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore. He said MCF had promised to pay Rs 4 crore to the corporation as an "advance water tax" that would be adjusted towards water bills payable by the MCF.

Under the urban development programme, funded by the Asian Development Bank, the city already had 800 km pipeline that would have to be charged with water.

But the old dam and pumping system at Thumbe did not have the capacity for that task, he said.

He had requested the Deputy Chief Minister to release Rs 30 crore towards the vented dam provided the corporation could pay Rs 10 crore as its contribution.

He said the dam should be ready to supply water from the next rainy season.

The Hindu Udupi, Sep 11: A railway employee died when he slipped and fell from a goods train at Bellur in Kundapur taluk under the Kota police station limits on Sunday. The police said the goods train was proceeding from Udupi to Kundapur, when Raghavendra fell from the train. The victim was rushed to the KMC Hospital in Manipal, where he died, the police said.

Mangalore, Sep 10: A highly educated region producing qualified human resource is what holds Coastal Karnataka better equipped to meet the streams of opportunities offered by the Special Economic Zone that will be soon established in the region. This hope was given by Chief Operating Officer of the Mangalore SEZ A G Pai.

He was speaking at the seminar, "Samvada", on the Coastal Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) organised by the Organisation for Managerial and Entrepreneurial Guidance and Assistance (OMEGA) of the T A Pai Management Institute here on Sep 9.

The region is ideal for mega projects, however wise use of resources must be ensured, he said.

Problems like scarcity of water, proper sanitation etc must be attended to quiet early, he emphasized.

Experts including Development Commissioner of the Kochi SEZ C J Mathew, president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry A Srinivasa Rao and Secretary Economics and International Trade of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry Prasanna Srinivasan participated in the panel discussion.

Till now, chartered accountants were allowed to practise only as proprietors or in a partnership firm and could not become managing or executive directors of the company. President of the ICAI T N Manoharan told said that the central council of the institute had taken a decision to this effect. Earlier, chartered accountants could not become managing directors or executive directors of companies nor take an active role in the day-to-day running of the company. Members had to take special permission in such a scenario, he said. However, in the changed situation, where others were rendering consultancy through corporate bodies, the institute felt this constraint would put chartered accountants at a disadvantage. Members would now have access to a larger pool of human resources and could undertake more work, he said. However, such companies should undertake only consultancy services and not enter into any other business or work, he clarified. Chartered accountants, who are permitted by the CA Act to render consultancy services, can hold positions in such corporate firms and become executive or managing director and even practise in the firms. They can also train students for articleship and guide them academically, he added. On the brand-building initiative, Manoharan said the central council was expected to take a decision on a suitable logo for the profession by October. The National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, had submitted six entries, including three more on request, he said. "We have received many suggestions and entries from members following publication in the Institute's journal of our intent to come out with a logo for the profession," he said.

Mangalore, Sep 9: A car carrying pilgrims to Sri Mookambika Temple at Kollur near Kundapur was burnt owing to sudden fire at Panambur circle near here on Friday September 8.

A family from Kerala was travelling on the car to Kollur. As car reached Panambur, the car driver noticed some smoke emanating from the engine. He immediately stopped the car and opened the bonnet. At this point he noticed fire in the engine.

The person inside the car came out and went a bit far from the car. A message was passed on to police as well as to fire brigade. But by the time they arrive, the car had been charred.

Though reasons for this sudden fire are not known, it is said that short circuit might have resulted fire. The Panambur police have registered a case in this regard.

In an email interview with TOI , Mariyah talks about the ‘amusing’ hardliners who make ’some noise’, but can’t really do anything to prevent people from projecting Pakistan as a “moderate place”. Talking about actress Meera, she says that while her kiss in a Bollywood movie may have kicked up a fuss, it has actually made the Pakistani star quite popular in her home country, which has also taken part in other beauty pageants. Yet, the fiesty woman says she wants to return to Pakistan and try her luck in Lollywood. Q. How do you react to being called Pakistan’s first Miss Bikini? A. I have broken all barriers, and in the coming years there will be other Pakistani contestants, who will carry this title. My intention was to project Pakistan is a very modern way. Q. Mangalore, Sep 9: In a massive protest against chief minister Kumaraswamy, various Muslim organisations here took to the streets on Friday September 8, demanding an unconditional apology from the CM for his remarks that madrassas encourage terrorism.

The protest rally, organised by the Karnataka Forum Dignity, began at Jyothi Circle and terminated at the deputy commissioner's office. More than 5,000 people from all over the district joined the rally demanding CM's resignation along with the apology for having hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community.

Sunni Yuva Jana Sangha, New Age India Forum, Jamat-ul-Falah, Jamat-ul-Ulama and Central Muslim committee also participated in the protest.

Traffic was disrupted for a couple of hours in the heart of the city.
