Mangalore: Max Channel, Charu and Mandira Bedi Bring Gully Cricket to City

by Richie Lasrado, Daijiworld.com, Mangalore - Pics Dayanand Kukkaje

Mangalore. Sep 15: The Gully Cricket brought to the city by Max TV channel, with anchors Charu Sharma and Mandira Bedi heading the show, provided a heady dose of diversion and entertainment for the young crowd on Friday, September 15 afternoon.

Two sessions of Gully Cricket played on the Women's Polytechnic Ground in Bondel and MV Shetty College in Gandhinagar, Kavoor provided a full-throat chance for young students of either institutions and others to play no-holds-barred cricket with Charu and Mandira. There were no rules, no boundary lines, no TV replay, no Third Umpire - nothing of the sort. Perhaps it was enjoyed at a higher degree than what is watched on the idiot box.

While the first batch of mostly local girls at the polytechnic were a shy, staid lot, the one at MV Shetty were made up of girls mostly from northern India. They threw all timidity to the winds and faced up to the volleys from Charu and Mandira with guts and abandon. Boundaries were hit all over.

When Charu came in to bat, it was raining sixers and at least half a dozen balls were sent over a building opposite the ground, obviously rendering them write-off material. They could not be retrieved.

At both the venues, Charu Sharma and Mandira Bedi were mobbed by youngsters to be photographed with them and for autograph-hunting.

Speaking to Daijiworld, both of them said they were simply moved by the response and enthusiasm and Mandira had a special word for the discipline in the crowd in spite of their being overzealous.

Later on, the star attractions paid a visit to the Reliance Web World, the local facilitators of the event, who were assisted by Shads in event management.

New Delhi: Real estate price correction begins in India

Press Trust Of India Posted Thursday , September 14, 2006 at 16:51 ESTATE PRICE: Prices of residential space in Tier I cities have gone up rapidly during last 1 year. New Delhi: The Indian real estate market is likely to witness a 15-20 per cent drop in prices of residential space in Tier I cities over next one year where the prices have gone up rapidly during last 12 months, according to industry experts. "We expect that there will be a price correction of 15-20 per cent in the residential segments in over-heated markets like metros during next 12 months," Ernst and Young- Head real estate practice Ganesh Raj said at Indo-US Economic summit. “Price correction has already started in Noida in certain pockets,” he said. "After a certain price level, it will be a buyers market and developers will have to cut their prices," Raj adds. Hines Real Estate Managing Director Daniel MacEachron said price correction was expected in the land prices in the major markets (Tier I) over the next 12-18 months, which would lead to fall in the real estate prices in the housing sector. "The rising home loan rates would also lead to correction in the prices in residential segment," MacEachron said. DLF Ltd Advisor J K Chandra said some sort of correction has happened or would happen where the prices have gone up disproportionately. However, Chandra added that going forward the rate of increase in the real estate prices would not be as high as it has happened in the past 12-18 months. Later speaking on the sidelines, Chandra, who is also a Director of DLF Laing O'Rourke, a 50:50 joint venture between DLF and UK-based Laing O'Rourke, said that the JV has already started its operation with the company taking up five projects in Noida, Gurgaon and Bangalore.

Mangalore: Bajpe Boy Lanish Pinto’s Passion is Numbers

By Viju Mangalore - Daijiworld.com Mangalore

September 12, 2006

Mangalore: What is the sum of 52+45-52+54-33+18? Ten-year-old Lanish Pinto solves this problem within a wink of the eye. It is this developed skill that made him a mathematical genius who won the State-level Abacus and Arithmetic competition held in Bangalore.

A student of V std of Morning Star, Bajpe, Lanish is the only child of Lionel and Shanthi competed with 50 calculations in five minutes.

More than 1,000 students participated in the various competitions conducted at the State-level on Aug 15 in Vijayanagara, Bangalore. Lanish who participated in the 1 level C Category won the first prize beating around 400 children from various parts of the state.

Speaking to Daijiworld, he said that in the first level he had to solve calculations with 2 digit numbers. However, he plans to perform better in the 3 level which will be in 3 digits.

It was John and Priya Tauro, who introduced young Lanish to the world of fast calculations through Aloha Learning Centre, Bajpe. However in a short span of time, this young lad grasped the knack of solving fire breathing monsters in the shape of digits.

“Once at Aloha training, we saw him improve in his calculation abilities and have also noticed his sharpness and quickness. But what amazed us most was the speed at which he calculates,” said his mother Santhi.

Lanish is one among the two who attend the Aloha classes from his school. His ability has even stunned his teachers and his classmates. “His teachers told us that when students begin counting using their hands, Lanish already has the answer,” revealed Santhi.

But for growing Lanish, the skill is just a result of his hard work and constant practice and not something acquired by fluke.

His eyes are now on the nationals which are likely to be held in Gujarath.

Lanish aims at becoming an engineer!

Recognizing his achievement the Catholic Board of Education honoured him during the Teachers’ Day celebration held recently.

Joseph Periera - A Prominent Pakistani of Mangalorean Origin

Daijiworld News Network

September 12, 2006 Karachi: Members of the Mangalorean Catholic community "may now be found all over the world - from Norway in the north to Chile in the southwest and New Zealand in the southeast. There are Mangaloreans in virtually every country in Europe and in virtually every state of the United States. There are Mangaloreans in unusual and exotic locations like Korea, the Bahamas and Papua New Guinea. What binds these diverse and far-flung members of the Mangalorean community is that they commonly descend from a small group of families who returned to their homeland in 1799" from captivity in Srirangapatna (Seringapatam in colonial records), writes Dr Michael Lobo, the genealogist extraordinaire, in the blurb of his book, "Mangaloreans Worldwide" (Camelot Publishers, 1999, ISBN 81-87609-00-1).

For those Mangaloreans worldwide who have not yet laid their hands on Dr Lobo's books, it will be a surprise to learn that there are many fellow-Mangaloreans residing in Pakistan too. For a few, it may not be a surprise because some of their relatives are already settled there prior to the Partition.

But it was really interesting news for all of us when we came to know that a few Mangalorean catholic families reside in Pakistan.

Daijiworld found a prominent Pakistani of Mangalorean origin, Joseph (Joe) Pereira, who was born in 1940 and did his initial schooling in Bendur, Mangalore, while his parents lived and studied in Mangalore.

Joseph's grandfather, Joseph Rosario Pereira, was the postmaster at Kadri Post Office during the period that his father, Piedade Victor Pereira, was a student at Bendur School and St Aloysius College in the 1920s.

"I did my first year of schooling in 1945 at the Bendur School and the next year at St Agnes, which was the year a tiger decided to visit our class room the previous night.." recalled Joseph nostalgically, while speaking to Daijiworld.

"We lived nearby until 1948 in the property which was later occupied by J S D'Souza & Sons, after we moved to Karachi."

"My maternal grandfather, Robert Charles Aranha, owned and operated a clearing and forwarding agency from Ballard Estate in Mumbai, but lived in the Catholic surrounds of Bandra around Pali very close to St Anne's Church and the Western Railway residences. When we moved to Karachi by steamer from Mumbai, we were at 44 Pali Mala Road. My uncle Michael Aranha was an Inspector attached to the Mahim Police Station at that time," further recalls Joseph.

"My father was a branch manager with Canara Bank in Madurai in 1947 while we stayed in Mangalore. There was a branch of Canara Bank in Karachi to which he was transferred and he stayed on after Independence and joined the Habib Bank. The family joined him in February 1948," says Joseph, while asked what could be the motivation to migrate to Pakistan.

In Pakistan, the present Catholic Archbishop of Lahore, Larry Saldanha, is a third cousin of Joseph.

Sixtyfive-year-old Joseph, though settled in Karachi, visits Dhaka in Bangladesh frequently. His association with Dhaka is since 1954 when his late father, a banker, was posted to Dhaka from Karachi. A sister now lives in Dhaka, while his mother passed away in Dhaka in January, 2004. Another sister of his lives in Karachi and a brother in New Jersey, USA.

Joseph did his higher education at St Gregory's Notre Dame, in the Physics Department at the Dhaka University and IBA, Karachi. He retired five years ago as executive director, State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan, Karachi, which was a highly coveted post.

Joseph is married to Elizabeth nee Souza 'Shet' and they have two sons and three grandchildren. There are limited number of Catholics in Pakistan, according to him. There are many from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Bengal, etc, aggregating to about 20,000. "Mangalore has a smaller share, not more than three figures," says Joseph.

Incidentally, Dr Lobo has identified the presence of Kadri D'Cunhas in Islamabad, Gazni Aranhas, Falnir Aranhas, Taccode Colacos, Puttur Goveases, Falnir Lobos, Bondel Menezeses, Balmatta Paises and others in Karachi, a Omzoor-Mayadi Saldanha priest and Cordel Souza Shets in Lahore, a D'Souza nun in Multan and Kadri Mirandas in Rawalpindi, among others.

Who knows, more may come to light after the news spreads with this publication.

Prabhakar Rao, vice-president (production), MCF, handed over the cheque to Mayor K Ashraf at a function held in the council hall.

Ashraf said this was a historic moment for the corporation as it was now possible to raise funds from companies for the development of the city.

He said this was a vital contribution towards the dam to be built across the Netravati at Thumbe near Mangalore at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore. He said MCF had promised to pay Rs 4 crore to the corporation as an "advance water tax" that would be adjusted towards water bills payable by the MCF.

Under the urban development programme, funded by the Asian Development Bank, the city already had 800 km pipeline that would have to be charged with water.

But the old dam and pumping system at Thumbe did not have the capacity for that task, he said.

He had requested the Deputy Chief Minister to release Rs 30 crore towards the vented dam provided the corporation could pay Rs 10 crore as its contribution.

He said the dam should be ready to supply water from the next rainy season.

Mangalore: Chartered Accountants Permitted to Practise in Consultancy Firms

Jaideep Shenoy / The Hindu * The central council of ICAI has taken a decision to this effect * They can hold executive positions in such companies * Suitable logo to be found for the profession by October Mangalore, Sep 10: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has permitted chartered accountants to practise and hold executive positions in companies that are exclusively into consultancy services. Till now, chartered accountants were allowed to practise only as proprietors or in a partnership firm and could not become managing or executive directors of the company. President of the ICAI T N Manoharan told said that the central council of the institute had taken a decision to this effect. Earlier, chartered accountants could not become managing directors or executive directors of companies nor take an active role in the day-to-day running of the company. Members had to take special permission in such a scenario, he said. However, in the changed situation, where others were rendering consultancy through corporate bodies, the institute felt this constraint would put chartered accountants at a disadvantage. Members would now have access to a larger pool of human resources and could undertake more work, he said. However, such companies should undertake only consultancy services and not enter into any other business or work, he clarified. Chartered accountants, who are permitted by the CA Act to render consultancy services, can hold positions in such corporate firms and become executive or managing director and even practise in the firms. They can also train students for articleship and guide them academically, he added. On the brand-building initiative, Manoharan said the central council was expected to take a decision on a suitable logo for the profession by October. The National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, had submitted six entries, including three more on request, he said. "We have received many suggestions and entries from members following publication in the Institute's journal of our intent to come out with a logo for the profession," he said.

Pak’s first Miss Bikini breaks all barriers

Bharti Dubey [ 8 Sep, 2006 0200hrs IST TIMES NEWS NETWORK ] Mariyah Moten, a 22-year-old US-based Pakistani, is being billed as “Pakistan’s first Miss Bikini”. This after she won the title of Best in Media Category at the Miss Bikini Universe 2006 pageant in China on August 26. In an email interview with TOI , Mariyah talks about the ‘amusing’ hardliners who make ’some noise’, but can’t really do anything to prevent people from projecting Pakistan as a “moderate place”. Talking about actress Meera, she says that while her kiss in a Bollywood movie may have kicked up a fuss, it has actually made the Pakistani star quite popular in her home country, which has also taken part in other beauty pageants. Yet, the fiesty woman says she wants to return to Pakistan and try her luck in Lollywood. Q. How do you react to being called Pakistan’s first Miss Bikini? A. I have broken all barriers, and in the coming years there will be other Pakistani contestants, who will carry this title. My intention was to project Pakistan is a very modern way. Q. Pakistan has never had a beauty pageant. How do you think people back home have reacted to you parading in a bikini? A. Actually, Pakistan has participated in several beauty pageants. All the information on Pakistan’s participation is on www.misspakistanworld.com . Hardliners are basically people who try to impose their thoughts on others. We are not affected by people like them. We believe Pakistan is a country that is made up of moderate Muslims like myself. And yes, some people may not like the idea of a Pakistani girl in a bikini, but alas, we have done it and there is no way they can change anything about it. Q. Pakistani actress Meera had to face the wrath of conservatives in Pakistan after she wore skimpy clothes and did a kissing scene in a Hindi film. A. See, fundamentalists are everywhere. Even when the Miss World pageant took place in India, there were fundamentalists as well as feminists stalling it. Meera is doing very well, she is now more in demand, and has more people lining up to see her in Pakistan. She is very happy where she is, and conservatives could do nothing to her. This is simply noise made by people who have nothing better to do… it’s actually amusing how they are always so ready to react. Q. Would you be interested in acting in movies, especially Hindi films? A. Well, I would like to complete my education first (she is a management student). I am getting a lot of offers from Lollywood, and I may go to Pakistan this year to check these out. I am not sure how well it will go, but at the moment acting interests me. Q. What do you intend to do now? A. As I said before, my main aim is to project Pakistan to the world as a moderate place. I have succeeded in educating many girls who compete in these pageants about Pakistan, and cleared a lot of doubts people have about the country. I will do this in the coming year as well.

Mangalore: Show-cause Notice Issued to 36 Degree Colleges

Raviprasad Kamila / The Hindu They have failed to obtain `B' grade certificate from NAAC * The colleges have got `C' or `C plus' grade certificates * The action is based on a High Court order Mangalore, Sep 9: The Department of Collegiate Education has issued a show-cause notice to 36 degree colleges (or first grade colleges) in the State asking why the department should not recommend to the Government to withhold, withdraw or reduce grants to them for failing to get "B" grade certificate of assessment and accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The department's action is based on a High Court order issued on March 27, 2004, in writ petitions 31576-87/1997 and connected writ petitions. These 36 colleges had got either "C" or "C plus" grade certificates from the NAAC. But the court had directed the Government that such colleges should produce "B" grade certificates for receiving grants. The court order said that the Government should within four weeks (from March 27, 2004) issue an order/notification specifying the period within which private educational institutions claiming or receiving grants should produce "B" grade certificates of assessment and accreditation from NAAC. If they failed to comply with the requirements of Rule 15 (1) (f), the Government could examine and pass orders regarding withholding, withdrawal or reduction of grants to such institutions. Following this, the Government, on June 16, 2004, issued a notification giving time to the colleges to obtain "B" grade certificates. Colleges situated in urban areas, excluding urban centres under Hyderabad Karnataka Development Board (HKDB), were given time till April 30, 2005, and colleges situated in rural areas and those under HKDB were given time till April 30, 2006, to obtain the certificate. Of the 36 colleges four are in the Mangalore University limits. They are Kukke Subrahamanyeshwara College; Besant Evening College, Mangalore; B.T. Channaiah Gowramma College, Somwarpet; and Poornaprajna Evening College, Udupi. A M Narahari, president, Federation of University and College Teachers' Associations in Karnataka, told The Hindu that if the Government should cut grants or reduced grants to the 36 colleges, it would affect approximately 500 college teachers drawing University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scale and about 300 non-teaching staff drawing the State pay scale. He said the Government could give more time to these colleges to obtain the certificate. If not, the Government could file an affidavit in co-urt explaining the reasons and seeking permission to continue the grant.

Report by Vini Vijayan, Daijiworld

Mangalore, Sep 8: ‘Anubhav,’ the Women’s Forum of St Aloysius College, organised a one-day seminar on Gender Equity, Sep 7 in the college.

The topic is a mandatory study subject for the students under credit based semester system (2006-07 onwards).

The seminar comprised of two sessions – ‘Gender, Sex and Gender Stereotypes’ and ‘Discrimination Against Women’. Dr Rita Noronha of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, interacted with the students, in making the session informative and interesting.

Dr Noronha opined that 18-20 years of learning in schools and colleges cannot be unlearned easily. She explained the basic concepts of gender and sex. While making the students express their opinion about the topic at hand, she made it clear that individual has to be respected for what he/she is irrespective of one’s gender.

Women need not be treated as ‘goddess’, instead, they be treated as normal human beings, said Dr Noronha.

Women do not want to be superior. It is when one wants to claim superiority that there are all efforts made to put down the other person. This is where problems arise. Hence, equality is the right attitude, she said.

Dr Jacinta D’Souza, Principal of Roshni Nilaya spoke on ‘Discrimination Against Women’.

Women in our society have been victims of ill-treatment, humiliation, torture, and exploitation. Now, violence is moving to public spheres from just a private issue, said Dr Jacinta citing many examples of gory violence.

Changing the parental attitude towards female children, and strengthening women’s organisations will help in decreasing violence and discrimination against women, she added.

Observing that the litigation on the 20 acres will not come in the way of the construction of runways, he said that it needed for the completion of work. He said that the district administration had promised to handover the 20-acre land as the High Court was expected to deliver verdict on the case within a month. Rao disclosed that the second phase of the development will enable the Mandakalli Airport to handle Boeing 737 and Air bus 320 aircrafts. Selvakumar expressed the hope that the verdict will be delivered within a month as the hearing of the case had already concluded. Mangalore: Neglect Makes Royal Houses Tumble down

By Viju Mangalore - Daijiworld.com Mangalore

September 6, 2006

“A prophet is not recognized in his hometown.” These words of Jesus Christ stated in the Bible can be applied to the heritage buildings of DK district. It’s indeed a sad state of affairs that these structures, which have volumes of history attached to them, face neglect at the hands of the district administration.

The irony is that the coastal districts are displayed as places of rich historic significance to the rest of the world. A separate department called the Archeological Dept has been entrusted the task of preserving these buildings of historic value.

The Vittal Palace - in the present Bantwal taluk - is one among those several monuments, which have not been accorded their due place.

History speaks of the Vittal king Achuta Heggade who was overhauled by Hyder Ali. The former was supported by the British and was residing in Talacheri.

Achuta would visit Vittal occasionally to regroup his men and fight Hyder Ali. For this, he had to lose his life. Hyder Ali had him hanged to death. His palace in Vittal is on a ten-acre land with a large magnificent stone-carved door. The ancient foundation has round towers and even had a stable.

A close look at the palace, now in ruins, can make one imagine the grandeur of the structure during those days.

Ravivarma Narasimharasa Domba Heggade, the successor of Achuta Heggade kindled the sparks for the first revolt against the British who were ruling coastal Karnataka after the death of Tipu. But Domba Heggade was hanged by the British.

The foreigners took possession of all that Vittal Heggade owned, except the personal property and wealth. In return, the Englishmen paid an annual royalty.

The descendants of the royal family still live in the palace. In 1783, the family went on a pilgrimage to Kashi and in memory of it set up a Kashi Math.

Ravivarma Narasimha Domba Heggade built a new palace within the premises of the old one between 1790 and 1800. He along with his son-in-law won back the Vittal kingdom and ruled to the end of his life.

The palace today is on the verge of oblivion. No efforts are being made to conserve this heritage building.

A similar state is that of the Moodbidri palace. This historic building, which tells a history of a period of 600 years. is a beautiful edifice, a rare example of ancient architecture.

This palace of the famous Chowta dynasty stands tall even amidst ruins with its intricate wooden carvings.

At the entrance stands a single stone carving of an elephant, a marvellous display of the skill of the sculptors that speak volumes on their efficiency. Among the 13 palaces of the king’s commanders, this building is the biggest of the Jain dynasty with six courtyards. When it could not withstand the test of time, the dilapidated structure was rebuilt with fine wooden carvings with teak and sal trees.

Out of the six houses, only two have survived. While the descendants of the Chowta’s reside in one house, the other is almost dilapidated.

History repeats itself ! But will these priceless monuments re-live the past glory? Conscious efforts to conserve them will go a long way in appreciating the past glory.

New IndPress Mangalore, Sep 6: How should a teacher be? Those in deep introspection about their role on Teachers Day will surely find some inspiration in this ‘teacher couple’ B Sreenivas Rao and Savithri S Rao. The elderly couple have and continue to prove that it takes only small gestures to spread happiness. Their modest home with minimum necessities near Urva market today is virtually a classroom, laboratory and logistics centre for uninitiated. Even after retiring from their teaching responsibilities 15 years ago the couple have surrounded themselves with children and their related activities. They are known for accepting requests, even from complete strangers, for help with writing essays, speeches, drawing, singing, dancing and helping tough science and maths subjects. Two months ago a USA educated lass of Mangalorean roots had sought out the couple to learn Kannada. They did not disappoint her and using material published for neo-literates the Rao couple helped the girl to read and write Kannada. Both Sreenivas and Savithri have helped many intelligent students strapped in poverty to continue their education. One such talent to benefit is herself a teacher. Two years ago when Rao completed 70 years it was decided that small gestures for poor children should sustain even after their death. At a young age Sreenivas Rao realised the state of being helplessness when he could not raise Rs five to pay fees. “Due to poverty my husband’s desire to become a Doctor was never fulfilled,” Savithri rues and added that their decision to help poor children was supported by close relatives and a trust ‘Kallavu Savithri Sreenivas Trust’ was formed. The issueless couple set asiding a small amount for their needs have poured their retirement benefits and all savings into the trust. “Though the annual interest accrued from the trust is Rs 10,000 we end up spending more than Rs 25,000,” Savithri Rao explains. Mangalore: Capuchins Change Grape Juice into Wine

by Viju Mangalore- Daijiworld Mangalore

September 5, 2006

Mangalore: Divine powers changed water into wine at Cana. But, for these humble Capuchins, changing grape juice into wine is a long-cherished activity, a ministry.

Over 40 years old is the only winery situated in the coastal region. Run by the priests and brothers of the Order of Friars Minor, the winery produces pure and natural sacramental wine, which reaches far and wide.

Catering to all the churches under Mangalore diocese, the wine fermented in the winepress at Farangipet also serves the neighbouring dioceses of Chikmaglur, Beltangady and Shimoga.

What makes this winery unique is its history. Fr Cornelius, superior of the Monte Mariano Capuchin Friary, Farangipet gives an insight into the 4-decade-long history of the winepress.

“In the mid-19 century, wine was imported from other countries. However, imported raisins (dry grapes) were used later to manufacture wine in India. But when war broke out between Iraq and Iran, the price of raisins shot up from Rs 22 to Rs 122 and thus local grapes were used.”

At that time one could not add sugar to grape juice to manufacture sacramental wine, as the rules for processing wine were strict. The winepress in Monte Mariano Farangipet was run by the Capuchins and was begun by Fr Titus D’Souza in 1971.

As fermentation ceased owing to various reasons, the Mangalore diocese asked the Capuchins to manufacture wine from fresh grapes, which were brought from Bangalore.

Vinicola was the only company, which fermented synthetic wine, which was being used for liturgical purposes. “At the winery, only sugar is added to the grape juice,” said Fr Cornelius.

What began in a small way in 1971 under the Mysore Excise Act 1965 and by paying a sum of 25 fees, today manufactures over 4,500 to 5,000 litres of wine annually.

Wine has no tax and Vinicola (Goa) Shaw Wallace were the only companies producing wine. The Monte Mariano winery manufactures wine 4 to 5 times a year with 400 kgs of grapes each time.

Wine fermented here is good and natural and is bottled. The Capuchins learnt this art from Kerala. The Order had sent Br Rudolph to learn the fine art of wine fermenting. Priests come to Monte Mariano occasionally and take wine for liturgical purposes.

“Wine making is an art, says Fr Cornelius. In summer, grapes are sweet and ferment quicker and wine matures faster than in rainy season when the grapes are sour,” he adds.

The dark, purplish red colored liquid is stored in huge glass jars in the wine cellar in the winery. Silently, the followers of St Francis of Assisi, carry on their ministry through their winery. At the altar this wine becomes the Blood of Christ, according to Christian faith.

Farah Khan Shakes Shakira's Hips

IndiaFM

Mumbai, Sep 4: Even as Farah braces herself for the Big Night on to choreograph pop star Shakira's number Hips don't lie at Radio City New York, she was seen bonding big-time with the pop icon. Squealed Farah from NY, "She's so tiny! Shakira and I have connected beautifully. She loves the movements that I've given her, so much so that she now wants me to do a music video for her. She's now into classical Indian dancing. In fact she's got an Indian lady in Chicago to teach her classical mudras. Shakira will be starting her item tonight at Radio City with some mudras."

And what's Shakira wearing for the Grand Slam at Radio City? "We've given her a mixture of the Indian and the Columbian look, down to a veil covering her face. Shakira looks very much like one of those classical Indian princess from the Amar Chitra Katha comic books. Nearer our films, the parallel would be the Amrapali costumes that all our heroines from Vyjanthimala to Sridevi have worn in our films. All I can tell you is Shakira is looking damn hot, damn Indian. Do you know there's a huge hoarding of Shakira in a Sari in NY advertising her item on MTV America tonight." Apparently Shakira loves Shah Rukh. Laughs Farah, "She has seen my Chaiyyan chaiyyan song from Dil Se. She keeps pointing to Shah Rukh in the song and exclaims, " know that guy.' I told her he's the Tom Cruise of India. I've promised her I'd put her on top of a train when I do a music video with her."

One of the unexpected pleasures of being in NY? "Karan Johar is also here, though he, lucky bum, is on holiday. We keep taking walks hand in hand. The last time we were here we were so stressed trying to finish the KANK shoot in time. Karan is lucky to take a holiday. Even I've been really stressed about KANK and now my husband's film Jaan-e-Mann."

Any butterflies in her stomach about the event tonight? Farah brushes off any apprehensions. "I'm never stressed about anything to do with myself these days. I only get stressed about my husband and his film. But yes, Shakira gave me only two days to rehearse and what we've achieved should make all of us in Bollywood proud."

Mangalore: Tuluvas Seek Justification for Neglect of DK District

The Hindu * The naxal problem is attributed to the neglect of tribal people * Tulu is not included as an optional language even in primary school * More emphasis given to growth of Bangalore `More emphasis given to growth of Bangalore' Mangalore, Sep 5: People in power may term it as a separatist movement but Tuluva people are seeking concrete answers from the State Government on the reasons for neglecting Dakshina Kannada district say activists Jayaram Rai Malar and Dinesh Mulky. According to Rai and Mulky the people have several questions but neither the Government nor the elected representatives or officials are in a position to answer them. Rai said the politicians from Dakshina Kannada joined the coterie that did not look beyond the development of Bangalore. As a result, the development of Dakshina Kannada was neglected. Some of the projects that were neglected include the Mangalore-Bangalore railway, irrigation, watershed development and drinking water projects. The poor conditions of National Highways, major district roads, fisheries roads, State highways and public works department roads added to their woes, he added. Mulky said the neglect towards Dakshina Kannada was more pronounced particularly in the light of high literacy. The people all over the State now felt the difference. If the policy-makers, officials and politicians continued to favour Bangalore and neglected other areas separatist movements would begin all over the State, he added. He attributed the naxal problem in the district to the total neglect of tribal people and underprivileged classes. The Tuluva tribal people became easy prey to naxalites owing to lack of socio-economic development. The financial package that the Government announced did not reach them either. Mulky said several leaders including the chairman of the Central Administrative Reforms Commission M Veerappa Moily had represented the need for including Tulu language into the eighth schedule of the constitution but the Centre and the State did not take any action. He said Tulu was one of the languages cited in the list of official languages of several universities in Canada, United States, Australia and some countries in Europe. But the Karnataka Government did not even include Tulu as one of the optional languages for primary classes, he added.

Bangalore: Infosys Mentor Murthy to Help City Retain Top IT Slot

New IndPress Bangalore, Sep 4: Burying the hatchet with the Karnataka government over the development of Bangalore, Infosys Technologies chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy has agreed to head a vision group to help the city retain its pre-eminent IT slot. Murthy, who stepped down as chairman of the country's second largest IT bellwether in July, has accepted the offer of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to head the IT vision group and shape the state's IT vision. According to the chief minister's office, Murthy agreed to accept the offer in a letter to Kumaraswamy last week. "I am grateful to you for inviting me to chair the state IT vision group. It will be a privilege and pleasure to do so," Murthy stated in his acceptance letter. It may be recalled Kumaraswamy had invited the IT czar to head the vision group during his address at the silver jubilee celebrations of Infosys in Mysore July 31. "The state government would like to benefit from Murthy's vision, his enormous experience and desire to work for Karnataka after his retirement," Kumaraswamy said on that occasion. Murthy had resigned from the post of non-executive chairman of the Bangalore International Airport Limited in November last following a spat with Kumaraswamy's father and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. He relented to head the IT vision group after he found the "young and dynamic" chief minister committed to the development of knowledge-based industries in the state and retaining Bangalore's edge in the IT sector. "Murthy had consented to chair the vision group at a meeting with the chief secretary (B K Das) and IT department officials at a meeting Aug 25, where issues related to the growth of IT and knowledge-based industries were discussed," said IT secretary Anup Poojary. In the run-up to the Bangalore IT event next month-end, the vision group will be meeting soon to chalk out a time-bound programme to promote knowledge-based industries and showcase the state's eco-system to prospective investors. "The government is keen to replicate the success of Bangalore in the knowledge sector in secondary cities across the state by creating an enabling environment, including infrastructure, connectivity and logistics," Poojary told IANS here on Sunday. While the vision group on biotechnology (BT), headed by Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, will continue to function separately, the IT vision group will focus on implementing the state's millennium IT policy announced in 2000 under the then IT-savvy chief minister S M Krishna. Accounting for 37 percent of the country's total IT exports of Rs.1, 008 billion ($22.4 billion) in the last fiscal (2005-06), Karnataka retained its top slot by exporting software services and hardware goods to the tune of Rs.401 billion ($8.9 billion). As India's silicon hub, Bangalore alone contributed for Rs.366 billion ($8.14 billion), registering a year-on-year growth of 36 percent over the previous fiscal (2005). With the booming IT sector sustaining the growth rate in the current fiscal (2006-07), the state-owned software technology parks of India (STPI) has projected IT exports from Karnataka at Rs.490-500 billion ($10.9-11.1 billion) by March 31, 2007. About 1,200 tech firms, including about 500 multinationals employ about 375,000 people, including 170,000 in the IT-enabled services such as call centres and business process outsourcing services (BPO). In terms of investments, the state has attracted 201 IT firms during the last fiscal (FY 2006), including 124 foreign equity companies, with a combined investment of Rs 27.61 billion ($614 million). "At the rate of four new companies every week, the STPI units have been growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 13 percent. About 10 foreign equity firms were approved every month in the last fiscal," STPI director B V Naidu recalled. In order to ensure Bangalore remains the preferred IT destination, the government is setting up 1,400-acre hardware technology park near the upcoming international airport at Devanahalli and has earmarked 500 acres each at Bidadi and Dobbaspet on the outskirts of the city for setting up new software companies. As per the McKinsey-Nasscom report, Karnataka is projected to achieve $20 billion IT exports by 2010; with about 500,000 employed in the industry, including IT enabled services/BPO segments.

World-renowned Australian "crocodile hunter" and television environmentalist Steve Irwin killed accidently

AP, 4th Sep 2006, 12:30IST BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition. He was 44. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when he was stung, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site. He collapsed at Batt Reef, near Low Isle and the resort town of Port Douglas, Queensland state police said in a statement. Port Douglas is about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane, the state capital. A rescue helicopter rushed to the scene but Irwin had died, the statement said. Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef and said cause of death appeared to be a "stingray strike to the chest." Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel. He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction. Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his month-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other. Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations. Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken. Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections. Irwin told the Australian television program "A Current Affair" that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me." He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Eugene, Ore., and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Irwin for his work in promoting Australia through projects such as "G'Day LA," an Australian tourism and trade promotion week in Los Angeles in January. "The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," Downer's spokesman Tony Parkinson said. Stingrays have flat bodies and tails with serrated spines, which contain venom and can cause cuts and puncture wounds. The creatures are not aggressive and injury usually occurs when a swimmer or diver accidentally steps on one.

Mangalore: Green Signal Likely for Kudroli Abattoir

Times of India Pics by Dayanand Kukkaje Mangalore, Sep 3: The abattoir at Kudroli, which was closed on grounds of noncompliance of environment norms, is likely to be opened for operations as Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) official Jayaprakash has expressed satisfaction over the facilities available at the abattoir. Jayaprakash, who visited the slaughterhouse on the instructions from the board, was accompanied by mayor K Ashraf and MCC commissioner Krishnappa Poojary. The abattoir was closed down following the orders of the KSPCB when it found that the Corporation had failed to comply with the facilities that the Board had specified to check environment pollution. The major cause of concern was the release of waste to the open drain which connected to the river alongside the abattoir. Following instructions from the Board, the Corporation had initiated action by constructing additional silt tank, toilets, and laying granite slabs all over the place. The Board had then given permission to run the slaughterhouse for two months between April and June after which it again ordered its closure stating that shifting of the abattoir was the only option with them. However, the commissioner had written to the Board requesting more time as the proposed project of constructing a new abattoir on the outskirts of the city had taken a beating due to varied reasons. In the meantime, the Board on Saturday sent its official Jayaprakash to inspect the abattoir to check if the environment norms are complied. A report from him is expected to reach the Board soon following which the slaughterhouse may be allowed to function for a couple of months. The closure of the abattoir has badly hit the contractor who bid for managing the slaughterhouse for a period of one year. The corporation officials refuse to comment on the future course of action.

Is Mallika Sherawat Just 25 ?

India FM

Mumbai, Sep 1: The lady in the picture is Reema Lamba. Confused as to who she is?

Well Reema Lamba is none other than the now rechristened Mallika Sherawat. If you are wondering how old this snap is, then let us clear your doubt.

The picture was taken in 1995, when Miss Sherawat a.k.a Reema Lamba was a part of the crew of Air India. The only point to ponder about is her age.

Mallika's age when the picture was clicked was 23. But her present age, she prefers to tell the world is 24, as her declared date of birth is 24th October 1981. So has Mallika just grown one year old in the past decade? And here we are certainly not talking about her growth as an actress.

So if 11 years back she was 23, how old is she now? Well, our guess is as good as yours. Mallika can definitely teach a thing or two on how to age gracefully considering she still looks very young.

Mallika has Pyaar Ke Side Effects coming up soon. All we wish her is that her age does not have any side effects on her career and she continues to be as sexy as she is now for many more years to come.

Kundapur Origin Sr Noreen Bags National Award for Teachers

Kundapur Origin Sr Noreen Bags National Award for Teachers

Dr. Eugene D’Souza for Daijiworld News Network Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 2: Sr. Noreen of Apostolic Carmel has been selected among others for the National Awards for Teachers this year. These awards will be presented by The President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the occasion of Teachers' Day on 5th September 2006 at a function to be held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

September 5th is celebrated as Teachers’ Day every year in the memory of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President and a committed educationist. The National Awards for Teachers are given away every year to teachers who have excelled in their vocation. The Central Government gives away these awards on the basis of recommendations by respective State Governments and educational organisations.

For her meritorious and dedicated work in the field of education Sr. Noreen was recommended by the Government of Uttar Pradesh for this prestigious national level teachers award.

Sister Noreen comes from a large well-known and devout family of Pius Nagar in Kundapur. She is fourth among thirteen children of late Julian Fernandes(Jillu Master) and late Pauline Fernandes. They are altogether five brothers and eight sisters. (One of her brothers, William Fernandes expired recently).

Sr. Noreen was born on 2nd November 1947. Before joining the Apostolic Carmel Convent in 1965, she was known as Nelly Fernandez.

Sr. Noreen was a brilliant and dedicated student. Right from her childhood she admired the work done by the nuns in the field of education and decided to join the religious order. After completing her primary and secondary education at St. Joseph’s Girl’s High School at Kundapur, she joined the Apostolic Carmel Convent in 1965. After completing her training as a nun, Sr. Noreen went on for further studies and graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi in 1980.

As she was keen in taking up teaching assignment, Sr. Noreen acquired B.Ed. degree from St. Anne’s College of Education at Mangalore in 1981. Along with the teaching assignment, Sr. Noreen acquired M.A. degree in English literature from the Kanpur University in 1984.

Sr. Noreen has been teaching at Fatima Convent Inter College, Ashok Nagar in Kanpur (U.P.) since 1981. She has been known for her excellence in teaching. Appreciating her work as a teacher and realizing her potential for administrative work, Sr. Noreen was appointed as the Principal of the same institute in 1992. First as a teacher and then as the Principal, Sr. Noreen has impressed the students, parents and the government officials with her dedication to education. She has been the recipient of various awards for her contribution as a teacher.

These include the District Award from the Department of Education, Kanpur (1992), the Ganges Club Award (1990), awards from the Rotary Clubs of Kanpur and Ghorakpur(1994) and award from the Lions Club (2004). In recognition of her excellence in the field of education the Government of Uttar Pradesh has recommended Sr. Noreen’s name for the prestigious National Awards for Teachers. The profession of teaching runs in the family.

Sr. Noreen’s father, late Julian Fernandes, also known as ‘Jillu Master’ was a well-known teacher in Kundapur. One of her brothers, Fr. Vaalerian Fernandes is the founder Principal of St. Paul’s High School at Paithan in Aurangabad District of Maharashtra.

He is also recipient of a number awards for his contribution in the field of education. Four sisters of Sr. Noreen are also teachers. Rosy teaches in the Government Junior College, Mulky; Eliza is a teacher in the Government Primary School at Kalattur near Shirva; Matilda is a lecturer in the Vijaya Teacher’s College in Bangalore and Gladys teaches in the United Indian School at Kuwait.

Two other sisters of Sr. Noreen are also nuns. Sr. Millicent (Apostolic Carmel) who has passed the 8th Grade in Western Classical Music is the Music teacher in a Convent in Nagpur. Her other sister, Sr. Caroline (Holy Cross) is on a deputation to Switzerland.

The above facts amply justify the honour of The National Awards for Teachers that has been bestowed on Sr. Noreen.

Udupi-Pangla: Jasmine Culture - Now Spreading the Fragrance Globally

by Melwyn Pernal - Daijiworld News Network Mangalore

September 2, 2006

(Most of the South Kanarites living in India and abroad have heard of the Jasmine flowers sometime or other. No happy occasions are complete without them. However, not all of them know much about the background of Jasmine cultivation. Melvyn Pernal traces the fascinating story of Jasmine culture, which, on commercial basis, is uniquely restricted only to Udupi district.)

It is the beauty and fragrance of a flower that win the hearts of many an admirer. Each flower has its own unique attraction - just like the Jasmine flowers, which, with their bright white colour and lingering fragrance, portray their own identity. It is this fact that has made them a favourite with people from all corners of the world.

When we talk about 'Jasmine', the place that instantly flashes our minds is 'Pangla' or 'Shankarapura'. It is a small village in Udupi district in Karnataka, from where the Jasmine has spread its fragrance worldwide. Jasmine is called 'Pangllache kalle' in the local language. Now Jasmine is grown on a large scale in Shirva, Katapadi and Belman too.

How it began

In the 1930's, people belonging to Udupi district would go fishing or to work in coffee estates on the Ghats to earn their daily bread and to look after their family. At that time, Fr Peres (later to become the much-revered Bishop Peres) took charge at Shankarapura (Pangla) church to cater to the religious needs of the people.

After studying the financial hardships faced by the people and realizing that he had no alternative to stayin on, he brought some Jasmine plants from Bhatkal and trained the people on how to grow them.

During those days, flowers were widely used for worship in temples and for marriage ceremonies. When Jasmine was introduced into the market, it got wide publicity as well as got in good demand because of its simple charm and captivating scent.

But transportation was a tedious process, as there were neither good roads nor bridges. Therefore, three or four persons would collect the entire stock of flowers and travel to different places like Kundapur, Kallianpur, Karkala and Mulki on foot or by bicycle.

In the evening they would return and share the sales proceeds with the people from whom they took the flowers. But the problem was the price at which they had to sell them - it depended on the demand at a given place, hence the amount collected was not uniform. To solve this disparity, Fr Peres decided to work out an arrangement so that all could get equal share of profit. He formed a committee of four local persons, who were engaged in the sales as well as cultivation. This system is still working effectively today and helps the growers to decide the price uniformly without any bias.

With the modernization of the transport system, the Jasmine flowers reached prime places like Mangalore and others by about 1956. Invariably, the demand rose and so did prices. More and more people started engaging themselves in this business and today almost all the families in some villages in Udupi district grow Jasmine to earn their livelihood.

The price fluctuates between Rs 24 to Rs 240 for one 'atte' (four 'chendus'). The price will neither fall below Rs 24 nor rise above Rs 240, keeping in mind the benefit of the people who cultivate it as well as that of the buyers.

Nevertheless, the flower grows seasonally - from November to May, when the flower is widely grown. In rain and winter seasons, these flowers are less common.

Above pictures by Rakesh Kotian - Durga Digitals Udupi

'Jaji' or 'Jayo' - an alternative to Jasmine:

In the local languages we call it Jaji or Jayo, slightly reddish in colour, also called as red Jasmine. It is grown in plenty from July to September (during rainy season). Since Jasmine is grown less in these times, demand for Jaji rises, though not as much as for Jasmine. The drawback of this flower is that it perishes quite soon and cannot be preserved for over 12 hours.

The measure for Jasmine:

When the measure for Jasmine was decided, one chendu consisted of 1,000 flowers, but it was reduced to 800 and now one chendu consists of only 600 flowers. Four 'chendu' make an 'atte'. In Bhatkal, they are lined up with a thin thread; but here in Udupi the flowers are strung together with a natural thread obtained from the banana plant, which enhances the beauty of jasmine.

Albert Castelino of Pangla is continuing his ancestral business and is the coordinator of the union that decides the price. When asked about the present status of this business as well as the future prospects, he said that he was the only person sending flowers to Mumbai as well abroad by flight, even to this day.

After an initial struggle, in 1964, he began transporting the flowers by Indian Airline Dakota (which carried 28 passengers) to Mumbai and the transport charge then was Rs 1 a kg. With the increase in demand, the price structure too underwent an upward revision. Curreently, he is the main dealer at Pangla as well.

Flowers from around the district are brought to Pangla and distributed to other places. The specified amount is paid to the growers on a weekly basis. Hundreds of agents from different places supply flowers to him and get Rs 2 as commission per 'atte'. Local transportation is done though express and local service buses.

Whenever there were flight cancellations and any other reasons, Albert has had to face heavy losses, because the flowers cannot be preserved beyond a day.

Jasmine plants are more susceptible to insects and other attacks than the other plants are, because of their fragrance. Lots of pest control shops and persons who spray the insecticides too earn money from this business.

The 'Nagarjuna' Effect:

Another threat to the atmosphere, the Nagarjuna power plant is feared to have adverse effect on the environment as well as the growth of Jasmine. However, hampering the steps of progress like the Nagarjuna power plant citing reasons of environment to atmosphere or Jasmine is not advisable, feels Albert. Alternatively the district will develop further if the Nagarjuna plant were to begin functioning, for, power is the main source for industry as well as daily life.

International Airport:

Also, early completion of the dream project of an International Airport will definitely result in the jasmine rates sky-rocketing, because there is a big demand abroad with already many queries in line. The cultivators will definitely get higher prices than now.

Indra Nooyi, World's 4th Most Powerful Woman

Rediff New York, Sep 1: Chief Executive-designate of PepsiCo Indra Nooyi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and ICICI Bank's Lalita Gupte and Kalpana Morparia are among the 100 most powerful women in the world. India-born Nooyi finds herself as the fourth most powerful woman on earth, while Sonia Gandhi occupies the 13th position on the list. Joint managing directors of of ICICI Bank Gupte and Morparia are on the 93rd position, while Vidya Chhabria, chairperson of Jumbo Group, Dubai, is at the 95th spot. Angela Merkel, the first woman to become chancellor of Germany, has displaced Condoleezza Rice as No. 1 on our list of the 100 Most Powerful Women. Merkel won a tight election last year to unseat Gerhard Schroder as chancellor. She's a former physicist from East Germany and a firm believer in free-market capitalism. Since taking office, Merkel has won respect on the world stage and popular appeal in Germany for her quiet diplomacy. Despite her short time in office, Merkel has been dazzling world leaders, including Tony Blair and George W. Bush. But Merkel has a tough fight ahead of her. Her approval ratings have declined to 56 per cent from 80 per cent earlier this year, making it more difficult for Merkel to win big with key legislative initiatives, including health care reform and corporate tax restructuring. She inherited a stagnant economy that has only lately shown signs of revival. At the same time, Merkel also has allied Germany with the U.S. to oppose Iran's nuclear activities, and she was vocal on energy security at the G8 summit meeting this summer, where she was the only female leader at the table.

Dubai, August 24: It's again the festivity mood, with hardly two weeks away from yet another Nativity feast, Mangalorean Catholics spread worldwide have started to plan the celebration.

In the Gulf the traditional feast is being celebrated every year with great gaiety and pomp as everyone gets a homely feeling when they celebrate away from home. There are estimated 50-60 regional and community organizations of Mangaloreans functioning outside India. About 90% of them celebate the feast regularly.

"It is a great opportunity to meet the dear and near ones from our native places. That is how we feel the atmosphere of the 'Nativity' feast being celebrated back home. Of course this is very important for us because this is dedicated to Mother Mary and it is her birthday," says a reader while sending the news of their celebration schedule to daijiworld

It can be recalled here in the year 2001 the Bishop of Mangalore visited the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman and many had the opportunity to celebrate the feast in his presence. Similarly the Bishop visited Doha and Kuwait in the year 2004 where thousands of people joined him in the celebration.

"This feast gives us a special feeling. Though Easter and Christmas are of greater importance, here in the Gulf, the Nativity feast is celebrated with equal joy and fervour, " says another reader of daijiworld

"The speciality of the feast back home is to share the new corn grown. We make every effort to bring the new corn here and share it with each other and consume. 'Novem' is the traditional occasion and we want to celebrate this with devotion"

Following organizations have already announced their schedule. And those who want to publish their schedule, please write to us with limited details such as date, venue, time and contact numbers to our email ID: news@daijiworld.net

Mangalore: These Bedridden Children are Schooled at Home...

Savitha Suresh Babu for THE HINDU

KEEN LEARNER: Chaitra is being taught at home by Jayanthi under the inclusive education for the disabled scheme of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana in Mangalore.

MANGALORE, Sep 2: Eleven-year-old Chaithra can recite poems, count up to 20 and identify Kannada alphabets although she has cerebral palsy. She began regular education only two months ago.

She is one of the 29 children in the city who are being educated at home under the Inclusive Education for the Disabled (IED) scheme of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan.

According to Kumudini, an inclusive education resource teacher, five of 29 children are bedridden. They are provided special education that focusses on simple life skills, rather than academic learning. For instance, a child is taught how to brush her teeth or wash her face without assistance and, gradually, some poems and games. Regular education from first standard is provided at home for other physically challenged children whose main problem is commuting.

The names of these children are registered in a nearby government school. They appear for examinations conducted by the school. An attempt will be made to make these children start attending regular school after some time, says Ms. Kumudini. Last year, 35 children were taught at home. Six of them now attend regular school.

Volunteers who have completed their SSLC or PUC are appointed to teach these children. In some special cases of extreme disability, the mother, if qualified, might be appointed as the teacher.

According to Vanitha Shetty, a volunteer who teaches Chaithra, the children are taught some basic skills after which the tutors start with the regular first standard syllabus. The children are taught for two or three hours a day for two days a week under the programme, she says.

Chaithra's mother, Vedavathi, who rolls beedis for a living, says there is a lot of improvement since these classes began. "I now feel its possible for her to learn", she says.

According to Geeta, assistant project officer, Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan, 420 students in the district have been covered under the scheme.

Mangalore's Daughter-in-law Nooyi Now World's Fourth Most Powerful Woman

by Richie Lasrado - Resident Editor, Daijiworld, Mangalore
  • Sonia, Nooyi among 100 most powerful women in the world

Mangalore, Sep 1: When daijiworld last month broke the news of the appointment of Indra Nooyi, a woman of Indian origin, to head the international Cola giant PepsiCo effective October 1, 2006, most Indians' hearts were warmed.

When, the soon after, we dug out her Mangalore connection and traced her husband's family roots in suburban Gurupur, it set the city aflutter to some extent.

And now comes the news from New York that she, along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and ICICI Bank's Lalita Gupte and Kalpana Morparia, are on Forbes magazine's list of 100 most powerful women in the world.

When Nooyi was designated as the next CEO of the Cola corporate, comments were heard back home that it was a master-stroke on the part of PepsiCo to have appointed an Indian-born woman, especially when the Colas were going through a difficult phase in this country with adverse reports on their allegedly toxic ingredients. The step was to mollify the Indians and to tilt the public opinion in the company's favour, thought many analysts.

The potshots aside, it was creditable for an Indian, a woman at that, to have reached these dizzying heights. As for the blame of toxic ingredients, the PepsiCo can always take shelter behind the argument that Colas in the US are the purest and the most hygienic in the world and that the Indian versions are contaminated because of the kind of water available here.

All that apart, in terms of the great woman's achievements, this city has every reason to be proud of her.

Inputs from PTI

Gandhi occupies the 13th position on the list while India-born Nooyi finds herself as the fourth most powerful woman. Joint chairpersons of ICICI Bank Gupte and Morparia are on the 93rd position while Vidya Chhabria, chairperson of Jumbo Group, Dubai, is at the 95th spot. Topping the list is Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel followed by American secretary of state Condoleezza Rice at the second position.

Gandhi, says the magazine, "is widely revered, especially among the country's poor million and heads the 'left-leaning' party where she acts as opposition leader to pro-business prime minister Manmohan Singh."

"Gandhi frequently expresses concern that India's astounding economic growth is leaving the poor behind and that her country is not doing enough to help its farmers," the citation adds.

The magazine stresses that Gandhi heads the most powerful political party and has travelled far since she tentatively entered India's maelstrom in 1990s. "She won the general election in May 2004 but then took a pass on the prime minister's job, giving it to Singh," it notes.

Though critics used the move to call into question her power, "Gandhi is still widely revered especially among the country's poor millions," it adds.

The listing is based on a power ranking that, the magazine says, is composite of visibility (measured by press citation) and economic impact.

In its citation for Nooyi, Forbes says few people could handle either the presidential or the chief financial officer job at a company worth 100 billion dollars. But not only has Nooyi held both offices since 2001, she was recently hand-picked to become Pepsi's new chief executive, effective October 1.

Nooyi has a string of career successes that helped her land the corner office at the food and beverage giant. She was the lead negotiator on Pepsi's 13.8 billion dollar purchase of Quaker Oats and worked on its acquisition of Tropicana, as well as the spin-offs of its restaurant and bottling businesses.

Previously, Nooyi was an executive at Asea Brown Boveri, Motorola and Boston Consulting Group. Before emigrating to the U.S. from India in 1978, Nooyi was a product manager at Johnson & Johnson and Mettur Beardsell, a textile outfit, in India.

An ICICI lifer, Gupte has held a variety of positions in the bank since 1971 and is now in charge of its international business arm, Forbes says. Gupte is the joint managing director, along with Morparia, of India's second-largest bank, which boasts total assets of about 38.5 billion dollars. The bank now has subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Canada and Russia.

Morparia joined the bank in 1975 and now heads the corporate center that is responsible for strategy for the bank's different units. Morparia, who has a law degree from Mumbai University, is responsible for risk management, audits and compliance, the magazine notes.

Here is a concise bio-data of the Indian-born lady who has made the nation proud.

Nooyi's success formula "I have developed what I call the 5 Cs."

Competence: You must acquire a hip-pocket skill which you're known for, and keep working at it.

Confidence and Courage go together: Unless you're willing to speak up for what you believe in, you're never going to be much of a leader. But it's up to the company to provide you the courage to do so, by not shooting you down every time you do speak up.”

Communication skills, both oral and written, are really important.

Compass: Integrity must be at the root of everything you do, and people have got to know that they can take what you say to the bank.

Conscience: You have got to be the company's conscience. Challenges The challenges that lie ahead for the 50-year-old woman CEO of PepsiCo.

Got embroiled in a "middle finger" controversy during May 2005 with a speech to MBA graduates at the Columbia Business School. In the talk, she spoke of the world's continents and leading nations as being akin to a hand's five fingers. She referred to the USA as "the long middle finger".

In the beginning of August 2006, Pepsi and Coke were banned from distributing their beverages in several Indian states following concerns over pesticide levels. Both cola majors are now on a damage control exercise after the CSE alleged more than permissible pesticide contents in its beverages.

In May 2006, Pepsi, Coke and Cadbury Schweppes announced they would stop selling soda in elementary and middle schools in the US by 2009, as a response to pressure over rising rates of childhood obesity. A sneak peek into Nooyi's personal life

From the Archives Then 'New Eve' at PepsiCo's Helm has a Mangalore Connection
  • Indra Nooyi is married into a Gurupur household

By Richie Lasrado for Daijiworld Mangalore, Aug 17: When Daijiworld broke the news on August 14 about the new eve Nooyi at the helm of PepsiCo in the US, the name was already sounding familiar. Enquiries on Tuesday with different sources gave conflicting versions.

The name Nooyi may perhaps have puzzled the westerners. Whenever Indra Nooyi is featured in the media, a mention is made that the name is pronounced "New-ee".

A reader from Chennai, currently based in the city, confirmed on Tuesday that 'Nooyi' was not a Tamil family name. An old acquaintance, who knew of the family members many years ago, mentioned Kundapur as the native place. Confusion was added by Pepsi's Indian officials, upon our enquiry, giving credit to Mysore as the place of the family's origin, possibly because some old-timer had it in mind that Nooyi was located in erstwhile Mysore state.

Mangalore, Aug 29: The valedictory function of the two-day national-level intercollegiate fest 'ComQuest '06' was marked by the Symbiosis College of Management, Pune walking away with the team championship trophy for all-round excellence on Tuesday, August 29 evening.

While St Joseph's College of Commerce, Bangalore won the First Runners-up place, the Second Runners-up place was shared by St Aloysius College, Mangalore and Shri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College, Bangalore. In all, 18 colleges from different centres in Karnataka and distant places like Kolkata, Coimbatore and Goa enthusiastically took part in the high-profile event.

At the valedictory function, the students of the host college set the solemn mood with an inspiring invocation, followed a semi-classical 'Navaras' dance, depicting the nine human emotions. Video clippings on what went into the month-long preparations for the fest was screened with a live commentary by Shraddha Rao and Sweeny Lewis.

Magnum Intergrafiks chairman Sudhir P Ghate, accompanied by wife Sumana, was the chief guest on the occasion. Staff coordinator Deviprabha, principal Sr Carmel Rita and HOD Commerce Sr Supriya were also on the dais.

In his address, Sudhir Ghate highlighted the essence of being a CEO, in whose case honesty was the key. In most cases of CEOs today, the background was the subject of Commerce. He cited several examples of Mangaloreans heading nationalized and new generation banks, who were all commerce graduates. He said cryptically that what we needed today were CEOs like Narayana Murthy and not Phaneesh Murthy, which message was not missed.

He also took a mild dig at the parents sending their children to only medical and engineering line, where their careers would remain static and stagnant, the comforts, perks and fat salary cheques notwithstanding. On the other hand, the CEOs with the Commerce background could run a variety of organizations and business houses, he pointed out.

Ghate further recalled that he himself, as the student leader at Canara College in the city in 1978, had the privilege of organizing a Commerce fest. At St Agnes he found such impressive professionalism and perfection in the organizing team, he magnanimously offered employment to any of them in his business undertaking.

In conclusion, while stressing that competition improves confidence in an individual, Ghate said success in business lay in the concern for the customer and protection of interest of shareholders. Serving with a smile was the ultimate mantra in business, which he would recommend to all business executives-in-the-making amongst the student audience, he added.

Principal Sr Carmel Rita AC in a short message congratulated all participants and the winners to be announced and also thanked the entire team of her college for the wonderful job they did in organizing the mega event.

Staff coordinator Deviprabha thanked all those made the event a big success. She made a special mention of the press coverage, especially the Daijiworld's pictorial report of the inaugural event flashed to the world in a matter of three hours.

Representatives of various participating colleges expressed their views on the great time they had spent at the event. St Joseph's College Bangalore students presented a short humorous skit. Student coordinator Shraddha Rao and Sweeny Lewis compered the event, while Shraddha also proposed the vote of thanks.
